Chicago Cubs vs. Milwaukee Brewers preview, Saturday 9/7, 6:10 CT

A win tonight will give the Cubs the season series over the Brewers.

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

MILWAUKEE — Yes, I decided to head up I-94 for this one. So far this year, my personal record in Cubs road games is 3-1. Not that my presence means anything to the players, but I hope I’ll be 4-1 after tonight.

Things, unfortunately, will be tougher for the Cubs after today's bad news about Javier Baez. This sounds like the end of Javy's regular season, at least.

Today’s roster move: Here

There’s not much more to say about this game. The Cubs need to get out there and start another winning streak. The Cardinals/Pirates game will start at 6:05 p.m. CT. If you want to keep track, here’s Gameday for that game.

Here are today’s particulars.

Cubs lineup:

I'm not usually one to complain about lineup construction, but I have to agree with this:

Brewers lineup:

Yu Darvish, RHP vs. Gio Gonzalez, LHP

Last Sunday, when Gio Gonzalez faced the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Yu Darvish was held out because, the Cubs said, they are “managing his innings.”

Thus Darvish has not pitched in 11 days. This, hopefully, will allow him to continue his excellent post-All-Star pitching: Nine starts, 2.93 ERA, 0.975 WHIP, three (!) walks and 72 strikeouts in 55⅓ innings.

That stretch includes five innings of one-run ball (with eight strikeouts and no walks) against the Brewers August 4 at Wrigley Field. Darvish, in fact, had two good starts vs. the Brewers in 2018, really his only two good outings last year. Career vs. Milwaukee as a Cub: three starts, 17 innings, 1.05 ERA, 0.765 WHIP, three walks, 25 strikeouts.

Gio Gonzalez has made four starts vs. the Cubs this year and has a 1.40 ERA and 0.983 WHIP, with 18 strikeouts in 19⅓ innings. Against the rest of the league in 2019: 5.25 ERA, 1.521 WHIP.

I don’t get it either, but he has held current Cubs to a .197 BA (34-for-173) with two home runs (Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras).

Hopefully Darvish can battle him to a standstill.

Today’s game is on WGN.

SB Nation game preview

Please visit our SB Nation Brewers site Brew Crew Ball. If you do go there to interact with Brewers fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.

The 2019 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
