Cubs' highest-scoring innings, Part 1

On a late summer afternoon in 1922, in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cubs scored 14 runs.

Nearly a century later, that remains the most runs the Cubs have tallied in any inning of the Modern Era, which began in 1901.

The date was Friday, Aug. 25, and the final score was Cubs 26, Phillies 23.

...

You may know that is the highest-scoring game since 1901.

In fact, there have been only 2 other games in which teams combined for as many as 38 runs:

45: Phillies 23, Cubs 22 on May 17, 1979

38: Giants 25, Reds 13 on June 19, 1901

Six other games have featured 36 runs, including a 23-13 victory by the Cubs over the Cardinals on April 17, 1955. The most recent was Red Sox 19, Rangers 17, in 2008.

...

But what you may not know about the Cubs' 26-23 win in 1922 is that is 1 of only 3 games during the Modern Era in which a team scored 10 or more runs in an inning TWICE.

In the second inning, 2 innings before their 14-run outburst, the Cubs had scored 10 runs, wiping out a 3-1 deficit.

The Cardinals had a pair of double-digit innings in a 28-6 romp over the Phillies on July 6, 1929.

The Dodgers turned the trick twice as they defeated the Pirates, 23-6, on July 10, 1943.

But the Cardinals and Dodgers each had 2 innings of exactly 10 runs.

So, the Cubs are the only team since 1901 that has had both a 10-run inning and an inning of MORE than 10 runs in a single game.

..........

19 INNINGS OF 10 OR MORE RUNS

How often have the Cubs scored at least 10 runs in an inning?

Through queries using the Play Index at baseball-reference.com and by examining box scores on the site and in the Chicago Tribune, I was able to identify 19 times, in 18 games, that the Cubs scored 10 or more runs in an inning.

The first such game was an 11-run first inning in a 19-0 win against the Giants in New York on June 7, 1906.

The most recent was a 10-run second inning in a 17-2 rout of the Pirates in Chicago on Aug. 14, 2009.

From 1901 through 2019, the Cubs played 18,633 total games. Therefore, they have done it once every . . . 1,035 games.

...

The most runs any team has scored in an inning since 1901 was 17 by the Red Sox, in the seventh inning of a 23-3 win over the Tigers on June 18, 1953.

On April 19, 1996, the Rangers scored 16 times in the eighth inning as they throttled the Indians, 26-7.

The Dodgers scored 15 runs in the first inning on May 21, 1952, and rolled to a 19-1 win over the Reds.

After the Cubs' 14-run inning, there was only 1 inning of exactly 14 runs over the next 80 years: the Indians, in the first inning against the Athletics on June 18, 1950. The final score was 21-2.

Then it happened twice in less than 6 years.

On June 27, 2003, the Red Sox tallied 14 in the first inning of a 25-8 win over the Marlins.

On April 18, 2009, the Indians put up 14 in the second inning of a 22-4 win over the Yankees.

.........

CUBS OWN ALL-TIME RECORDS

The all-time record for runs in an inning actually belongs to the Cubs -- although they were known as the Colts when they set it.

On Sept. 6, 1883, at home against Detroit, the Colts came to bat in the seventh inning with a lead of 8-3. They ended the inning ahead by 26-3, as they scored 18 times, highlighted by a home run by Tom Burns.

"It was not a game that could be described, and should have been seen to be appreciated," the Chicago Tribune declared.

The game was the third of 5 in a row in which the Colts scored at least 12 runs. After a 21-7 win over Cleveland on Sept. 1, they routed Detroit on Sept. 4-8 by scores of 13-1, 14-1, 26-6 and 12-8.

...

The Cubs also hold the all-time record for runs in game.

On June 29, 1897, they obliterated visiting Louisville, 36-7.

"Writing under ridicule, the Colts turned yesterday upon the Colonels and wreaked a fearful vengeance upon them," said the Tribune. "During the game all records for league baseball were smashed to smithereens."

The Colts won the coin flip prior to the game and elected to bat first, so they batted in all 9 innings. Here is the line score:

Colts...... ...3 5 7...1 2 1....2 7 8 -- 36

Colonels... 0 0 1...0 5 0...1 0 0 -- 7

The Colts made 30 hits, 6 of them by shortstop Barry McCormick. Every player had at least 2 hits except Cap Anson, who had just 1, but drew 4 of the Colts' 10 walks.

..........

RUNS IN EVERY INNING

Note that the Colts scored in all 9 innings of that game.

Only 3 teams have accomplished the feat since that day, all in the National League: the Giants in a 22-8 win over the Phillies in 1923, the Cardinals in a 15-2 win over the Cubs in 1964, and the Rockies, in a 13-6 win over the Cubs in 1999.

In the 1964 game, St. Louis scored as many as 3 runs in only 1 inning, the seventh. It scored 2 in 4 innings and 1 in 4 more innings.

In the 1999 game, Colorado scored no more than 2 in any inning. It tallied 2 in 4 innings and 1 each in the 5 others.

Four National League teams have scored in all 8 innings they batted, including the Cubs, when they outlasted the Astros, 14-11, on Sept. 1, 1978. The others were the Cardinals, in a 13-2 win over the Cubs in 1935; the Rockies, in a 15-11 slugfest with the Padres in 2001; and the Brewers, as they beat the Braves, 11-3, in 2016.

So, of the 7 games during the Modern Era in which an NL team scored in every inning it batted, whether 8 or 9, the Cubs played in 4, winning 1 and losing 3.

No American League team ever has scored in all 9 innings of a game. Eight AL teams, each playing at home, have done scored in all 8 innings they batted.

Four of the 8 times it happened in the AL came between 1903 and 1949. The next 4 all came between 1998 and 2016. The most recent was in 2016, when the White Sox defeated the Indians, 11-4. They, too, scored either 1 or 2 runs in each inning.

.........

RANGERS SCORED 30

The Modern Era record for runs in a game is 30, by the Rangers on Aug. 22, 2007. They scored all their runs in a row after falling behind the Orioles, 3-0. Nine of Texas' runs came in the sixth inning and 10 in the eighth.

There have been only 4 other games in which a team scored more than 26 runs:

Red Sox 29, Browns 4 on June 8, 1950

White Sox 29, Athletics 6 on April 23, 1955

Cardinals 28, Phillies 6 on July 6, 1929

Indians 27, Red Sox 3 on July 7, 1923

The Indians had a 13-run inning in their game. The Cardinals had those 2 10-run innings in their game. The most runs the Red Sox scored in their game was 8; the White Sox, 7.

.........

CUBS SCORED 26 TWICE

The Cubs' 1922 game against the Phillies was 1 of 8 times a team has scored exactly 26 runs. The Cubs are the only team to score exactly 26 TWICE, also having done so in a 26-7 win over the Rockies on Aug. 18, 1995.

Here are all 8 of those games, in chronological order, with the most runs the winning team scored in any inning shown in parentheses:

6/04/1911: Reds 26, Rustlers 3 (9 in 8th)

8/25/1922: Cubs 26, Phillies 23 (10 in 2nd, 14 in 4th)

4/30/1944: Giants 26, Dodgers 8 (8 in 8th)

8/12/1948: Indians 26, Browns 3 (9 in 1st)

6/11/1985: Phillies 26, Mets 7 (9 in 1st)

8/18/1995: Cubs 26, Rockies 7 (7 in 1st)

4/19/1996: Rangers 26, Indians 7 (16 in 8th)

9/09/2004: Royals 26, Tigers 5 (11 in 3rd)

...

Note that only 3 of those 8 teams -- the 1922 Cubs, 1996 Rangers and 2004 Royals -- scored at least 10 runs in an inning.

..........

CUBS' GAMES OF 20 OR MORE

Since 1901, they Cubs have scored at least 20 runs in 15 games. But in only 3 of them did they also have an inning in which they scored 10 or more times:

5/15/1938 vs Philadelphia: 21-2 (12 in 8th)

5/05/2001 vs Los Angeles: 20-1 (8 in 7th and 8th)

..........

1945 STANDS ALONE

As you can see, they did it twice in a season only once, on their way to winning the pennant in 1945. Those games came just 43 days apart.

On the other hand, they currently have not scored 20 or more runs for nearly 19 years, far more than the previous longest gap of 11 years, 2 months and 14 days from 1911 to 1922.

Starting with those 2 games, the Cubs scored 20 or more runs in a game at least once for 10 decades, from the 1910s through the 2000s, including 3 in the 1930s and 2 each in the 1940s, 1950s and 1970s.

.........

MOST VS. PHILLIES

They have done in 4 times against the Phillies, 3 times against the Dodgers and twice against the Braves.

They have done it once against 6 other teams: the Astros, Cardinals, Giants Padres, Reds, Rockies.

Two against the Dodgers came when they were based in Los Angeles, and 1 when based in Brooklyn.

Both against the Braves came when they were based in Boston.

The 1 against the Giants came when they were based in San Francisco.

.........

ALL BUT 3 AT HOME

Twelve of the 15 came at home: all 4 against the Phillies, 2 against the Dodgers and 1 each against the Astros, Braves, Cardinals, Giants, Padres and Reds.

The first 5 came at home, followed by the 2 at Boston and Brooklyn, on July 3 and Aug. 15, 1945. Then the next 6 came at home.

So Aug. 18, 1995 at Colorado, where the Cubs tied their team record by scoring 26 runs, was their first game of 20 or more runs on the road in 50 years and 3 days.

And next Aug. 18 will be the 25th anniversary of that game, meaning it will be the only such game the Cubs have played in 75 years!

.........

10-19 RUN GAMES

Here is how many times the Cubs have scored 10-19 runs in a game, then how many of those included a double-digit inning:

19: 11/2

18: 8/0

17: 20/1

16: 40/2

15: 50/0

14: 80/0

13: 111/3

12: 203/4

11: 294/3

10: 430/0

...

Note that 3 games in which they Cubs scored 11 runs, yet had a double-digit inning. In all 3, they scored 10 runs in 1 inning and 1 run in another:

5/01/1964 at Houston: 11-3 (10 in 1st)

5/16/1969 at Houston: 11-0 (10 in 7th)

9/11/1990 vs Montreal: 11-6 (10 in 2nd)

On the flip side, the Cubs once scored 13 runs in a game and never scored more than 2 in any inning. It happened June 6, 1930, in a shutout win at Brooklyn. They scored 1 run in the second inning, then 2 each in the fourth through the ninth.

...

Since 1901, the Cubs have scored at least 10 runs in 1,262 games: 15 of 20-26, 129 of 15-19 and 1,118 of 10-14.

..........

239 OF 20 OR MORE

All MLB teams have posted 239 games in which they scored 20 or more runs. In 56 of them, they also scored at least 10 times in an inning.

Here is the MLB breakdown, showing how many total games in which a team scored a specific number of runs, then how many of those included a double-digit inning:

30: 1/1

29: 2/0

28: 1/1

27: 1/1

26: 8/3

25: 4/1

24: 14/6

23: 22/7

22: 33/4

21: 59/4

20: 94/18

.........

CUBS' 12-RUN INNINGS

The Cubs scored their team-record 14 runs in an inning against the Phillies on Aug. 25, 1922.

Fewer than 3 years later, on May 28, 1925, at Cincinnati, the Cubs were shut out for 6 innings and trailed, 1-0. Then they scored 12 runs in the seventh and coasted to a 13-3 win.

On Aug. 21, 1935, at Philadelphia, they scored 12 times in the sixth on the way to a 19-5 victory.

And on May 15, 1938, at home against the Phillies, they completed a 21-2 romp with 12 runs in the eighth.

They have not scored more than 11 runs in an inning in any game since, spanning more than 6 decades.

...

In fact, they have scored 11 only once in all those years, in the seventh inning of a 13-1 win at home against the Phillies on May 5, 1946.

So, it has been nearly three quarters of a century -- 74 years next month -- since the Cubs scored more than 10 runs in an inning.

They have scored exactly 10 runs in 10 games since the last time they scored 11.

............

CUBS' INNINGS OF 10 OR MORE

Here are the 19 times the Cubs have scored at least 10 runs in an inning, ranked by number of runs in that inning:

8/25/1922 vs Philadelphia: 26-23 (14 in 4th)

6/10/2004 vs St. Louis: 12-3 (10 in 4th)

8/14/2009 vs Pittsburgh: 17-2 (10 in 2nd)

...

Note that the Cubs never have scored 13 runs in an inning since 1901. They did score 13 at Pittsburgh in the fifth inning of an 18-5 win on Aug. 16, 1890.

The 14 runs they scored against the Phillies in the 1922 game are the most any team has scored in the fourth inning in the Modern Era. The Hartford Dark Blues scored 15 in the fourth inning of a 28-3 win over the New York Mutuals on May 13, 1876 -- just 3 weeks since the first game in the history of the National League.

...

Here are those 19 times again, in chronological order:

6/07/1906 at New York Giants: 19-0 (11 in 1st)

8/25/1922 vs Philadelphia: 26-23 (10 in 2nd)

6/10/2004 vs St. Louis: 12-3 (10 in 4th)

8/14/2009 vs Pittsburgh: 17-2 (10 in 2nd)

.........

TWICE IN 2 SEASONS

As you can see, 1922 (in the same game) and 1935 are the only seasons in which the Cubs have scored at least 10 runs in an inning twice.

The longest gap between 10-run innings was 17 years, 3 months and 11 days, from 1973 to 1990. Second-longest was 16 years, 2 months and 18 days, from 1906 to 1922.

...

Here is the breakdown by decade:

1900s: 1

1910s: 0

1920s: 3

1930s: 4

1940s: 1

1950s: 1

1960s: 3

1970s: 2

1980s: 0

1990s: 1

2000s: 3

2010s: 0

More than two thirds of all their double-digit innings -- 13 of 19 -- came in 1920s, 1930s, 1960s and 2000s.

In 2 of the past 4 decades, they never scored more than 9 runs in an inning.

..........

6 VS. PHILLIES

Six of 19 innings in which the Cubs scored at least 10 runs came against the Phillies. Those 6 were the second through ninth times the Cubs did it, all between 1922 and 1946.

The Cubs did it 3 times against the Astros, all in just over 9 years.

They did it 3 times against the Cardinals, over 49 years.

They did it twice against the Pirates, 74 years apart.

They did it once each against the Brewers Expos, Giants, Mets and Reds.

...

Ten of the double-digit innings came at home and 9 on the road.

Home: Phillies 4, Cardinals 2, Pirates 2, Astros 1, Expos 1

Road: Astros 2, Phillies 2, Brewers 1, Cardinals 1, Giants 1, Mets 1, Reds 1

..........

NEVER IN 2 INNINGS

Of the 19 times that the Cubs scored 10 or more runs in an inning, at least once came in every inning except the third and ninth. Here is the breakdown:

1st (3): 1906, 1964, 1973

2nd (3): 1922, 1990, 2009

3rd (0)

4th (4): 1922, 1963, 2002, 2004

5th (2): 1937, 1955

6th (1): 1935 at Philadelphia

7th (4): 1925, 1946, 1969, 1971

8th (2): 1935 vs Philadelphia, 1938

9th (0)

Note that 14 of the 19 came in just 4 innings: the first, second, fourth and seventh.
