Dillon Maples has had two appearances in relief for the Cubs in the six games so far in 2020; neither had good results and Wednesday’s was particularly bad.
Thus the Cubs needed some help in the bullpen and Thursday afternoon they got it, recalling right-handed pitcher Colin Rea from the club’s South Bend Alternate Site. Right-handed pitcher Dillon Maples was optioned to the South Bend Alternate Site after last night’s game.
Rea will be available for the Cubs tonight when they conclude their four-game series at Cincinnati.
When Rea gets into a game for the Cubs it’ll be his first appearance in the major leagues since July 30, 2016 when he was with the Marlins. Last year in the Cubs system, Rea went 14-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 26 starts with Triple-A Iowa in 2019. He was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year. Rea will wear uniform No. 20, last worn by Brandon Kintzler last year. Tonight’s game preview will post at 3:30 p.m. CT.
