Cubs roster move: Tyler Chatwood to injured list, Jason Adam activated, Jharel Cotton DFA

The Cubs are going to need a couple of starters for the doubleheader games this week.

Tyler Chatwood was scratched from Saturday’s start due to back problems, but manager David Ross had hoped Chatwood could start one of the doubleheader games Monday against the Cardinals.

That won’t happen, as the team announced Sunday that Chatwood would be placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to August 13) with a mid-back strain and that they would add reliever Jason Adam from the team’s alternate site in South Bend.

To make room for Adam on the 40-man roster, Jharel Cotton has been designated for assignment. (So it won’t be Cotton starting one of the Monday games.)

Adam, who will wear uniform number 60, was signed by the Cubs as a free agent last January 30 after pitching for the Royals in 2018 and Blue Jays in 2019. Originally the Royals’ fifth-round pick in 2010 out of Overland Park High School in Kansas, Adam also spent time in the Twins and Padres organizations. Last year he posted a 2.91 ERA and 1.154 WHIP in 23 relief appearances for Toronto. He’ll be available for Sunday afternoon’s game against the Brewers.

Kyle Hendricks will start one of the games Monday (probably Game 1) and given the pitchers currently on the active roster, it’s likely Game 2 winds up as a bullpen game.

As always, we await developments.
