Earlier Monday, the Cubs acquired lefthander Andrew Chafin from the Diamondbacks. Unfortunately, Chafin is injured and might not be able to pitch for a couple of weeks.
So, the Cubs went out and got another lefthander:
Cubs get Osich for PTBNL from Red Sox
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) August 31, 2020
Josh Osich pitched for the Giants from 2015-18 and for the White Sox in 2019 before being claimed on waivers by the Red Sox after the 2019 season.
So far this year, Osich has a 5.74 ERA and 1.340 WHIP in 13 appearances covering 15⅔ innings. Those numbers don’t look good, but these do: five walks and 20 strikeouts in those appearances. Per Fangraphs Osich throws mostly cutters; in the past he’s had a 95+ fastball but this year that velocity is down.
There is no official word from the Cubs yet on either this deal or the Chafin deal or who might be let go from the 40-man and/or 28-man rosters to make room.
We’re at the trade deadline now; as you no doubt know, trades only have to be reported to the commissioner’s office by 3 p.m. CT to be valid. They can be reported publicly after that. So, as always, we await developments.
