Today’s roster moves: Here
- MAYBE PNC GETS HIM OUT OF HIS SLUMP: Willson Contreras is hitting .364 (16-for-44) with a 1.131 OPS in his last 12 games at PNC Park since May 29, 2018, reaching safely in all 12. In those games he has eight extra-base hits (five doubles, a triple, two homers) and seven RBI.
- ROAD WARRIOR UPDATE: The Cubs are hitting 35 points higher on the road (.245) than at home (.210), and their .804 road OPS is 93 points higher than their .711 home OPS. Meanwhile, Cubs pitchers have a 5.40 ERA (70 earned runs in 116⅔ innings) on the road and a 3.86 ERA (75 earned runs in 175.0 innings) at Wrigley Field.
- THE SCHWARBINO: In his last 162 games since May 5, 2019, Kyle Schwarber has hit 43 home runs with 102 RBI to go along with an .890 OPS. In that span he has 75 extra-base hits in, including 29 doubles and three triples to go along with 43 home runs.
- BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Cubs’ 24 ninth-inning runs this season lead the majors (THE Diamondbacks and White Sox are tied for second with 21 runs apiece). Cubs hitters have batted a major-league best .345 (29-for-84) with a .429 OBP in the ninth inning this season.
Here are today’s particulars.
The Pirates lineup was not available at posting time. Please check the BCB Twitter feed for the Pirates lineup.
Jon Lester, LHP vs. Chad Kuhl, RHP
Jon Lester threw six strong innings against the Pirates August 4 at Wrigley Field, allowing four hits and one run.
Since then? Uh... don’t ask. But since you were going to: 6.53 ERA in four starts. His last outing was better, one run in five innings against the Tigers. And he has at least kept the walks down: just three in 20⅔ innings in those four starts.
So, Jon: Tonight, please channel that earlier start vs. Pittsburgh and do that again.
Chad Kuhl has made four starts and two relief appearances this year. One of the relief outings was against the Cubs, August 2 at Wrigley Field. He threw 1⅓ innings and allowed a run.
Since then he’s probably been the Pirates’ best pitcher: four starts, 2.70 ERA, 0.934 WHIP, .164 opponents BA. Current Cubs, though, are hitting .325 (27-for-83) against Kuhl with four home runs, two by Anthony Rizzo.

The 2020 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.
You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).
At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week/Date) game threads.” It will contain every thread related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.
You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.
The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
