If the Cubs are going anywhere in this year’s postseason, Adbert Alzolay is going to have to step up big-time, what with Jon Lester ineffective and Tyler Chatwood and Jose Quintana injured.

Alzolay, who will start Thursday’s game against the Reds, was recalled from the Cubs’ alternate training site in South Bend. To make room on the 28-man roster, Colin Rea was optioned and will report to South Bend.

Alzolay has made three appearances (two starts) for the Cubs this season and has a 2.08 ERA and 1.385 WHIP in 8⅔ innings.

Rea has a 5.79 ERA and 1.214 WHIP in nine appearances (two starts) covering 14 innings with the Cubs this season.

There were a couple other roster moves announced Thursday.

Steven Souza Jr., who was designated for assignment on September 5, cleared waivers and has been granted his release.

Matt Dermody has cleared waivers and been assigned outright to South Bend, while righthanded pitcher Joe Wieland, who last pitched in the majors with the Mariners in 2016, has been added to the 60-Man Player Pool and assigned to South Bend. Right-handed pitcher Juan Gamez and outfielder Ryan LaMarre have been granted their release.

Minor league infielder Pedro Martinez has been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays as a player to be named from the club’s acquisition of Jose Martinez.

The Cubs’ 60-man Player Pool roster currently stands at 59 players, with 28 active players on the major league roster (plus three 10-day injured list players) and 28 players in South Bend.
