Here’s Cub Tracks News and Notes. As always, * means autoplay on, or annoying ads, or both (directions to remove for Firefox and Chrome). {$} means paywall. {$} means limited views. Italics are often used here as sarcasm font.

“I just think, mentally, he needed a day. He was fine with it. I trust him. We’re still going to need him, still going to lean on him. But it’s one of those things. I got to thinking about the many times that I struggled in my career and how sometimes you can just spiral mentally, and I just wanted to give him a breather. That’s all.” — David Ross, on Javier Baez.

Spare the acid criticism for another battery. 10-4, good buddy. The simCubs clinched the NL Central with their 101st win, by that score, 10-4, and their convoy just keeps on rollin’ Jon Lester pitched decently but Brandon Palmer has him on ‘opener’ now, and Jesus Luzardo came in to put out the fire and vulture yet another win, his 16th. Willson Contreras was the player of the game and Anthony Rizzo went out to launch for three runs.

Just to keep the good times rolling, I’ll let you know that the Iowa Cubs (regular season 95-45) have already disposed of the Oklahoma City Dodgers 3-1 (both the game score and the playoff series) and are waiting to see where their next load can be picked up. They’ll be willin’.

Anyway the simCubs look to get the brooms out and maybe get the cabs detailed today at noonish CT and will then head home for a seven-game stand (4 against the Pirates, 3 against the Rockies). Tyler Chatwood (3-3, 3.76) will face Jack Flaherty (10-11, 3.59). Flaherty, like Miles Mikolas, has been victimized by the Cardinals’ punchless offense and should have a much better record than that. Chatwood has done well as an ‘opener’ since coming back from Triple A — The Cubs at this point have two starters and three openers, which makes Alec Mills and Luzardo invaluable.
