The Cubs begin the final regular-season homestand of 2020 Tuesday evening. Notes:

  • MORE MILLSY: Alec Mills’ no-hitter came in just his 15th career start. That’s are the fewest starts for a pitcher to record his first no-hitter since Chris Heston of the Giants did so June 9, 2015 against the Mets in his 13th career start (H/T: Elias Sports Bureau). The only Cub to record a no-hitter in fewer career starts is Burt Hooton, who tossed a no-no vs. the Phillies on April 16, 1972 in just his fourth career start.
  • YU KNOW IT: Yu Darvish has recorded eight-straight quality starts since July 31, going 7-1 with a 1.38 ERA (eight earned runs in 52 innings) in that stretch, holding the opponent to a .177 average (32-for-181), a .228 OBP and a .488 OPS while walking just 11 and striking out 67. More on Darvish below.
  • INTERLEAGUE INTERLUDE: This five-game homestand is all vs. AL teams, the Indians and Twins. The Cubs are 10-5 in interleague games so far in 2020 and 13-7 in their last 20 dating to July 19 of last year. Since the start of 2016, the Cubs are 59-33 (.641) in interleague play, the best record in the NL and second in the majors behind the Red Sox (62-32/.660).
  • RELIEF UPDATE: The Cubs bullpen has posted a 2.05 ERA (13 earned runs in 57 innings) in the team’s last 18 games dating to August 28, holding opponents to a .181 average (36-for-199) and a .541 OPS. During this stretch Cubs relievers have walked 24 and struck out 70.

Here are today’s particulars.

Yu Darvish, RHP vs. Carlos Carrasco, RHP

Yu Darvish had a bit of a blip in the first inning of his last start, but eventually he settled down and pitched the way he has most of this year.

He has not faced the Indians since June 28, 2017, and check out who was the Tribe’s leadoff hitter that day. Current members of the Indians are a small-sample-size 12-for-51 (.235) against Darvish with one home run (Jose Ramirez).

The Cubs hit Carlos Carrasco pretty hard August 12 in Cleveland: four hits, five walks and three runs in 4⅓ innings. Anthony Rizzo homered off him.

Carrasco had two not-so-great outings after that, but over his last three he’s been very good: 0.95 ERA, 1.052 WHIP in 19 innings.

So I would expect tonight’s contest to be a pretty good pitcher’s duel.

Please visit our SB Nation Indians site Let’s Go Tribe. If you do go there to interact with Indians fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.

The 2020 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week/Date) game threads.” It will contain every thread related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
