This is not really “breaking news,” as it’s been known since Sunday that Jose Quintana was going to be activated to start tonight’s game against the Pirates.

However, it was made official Tuesday afternoon when the Cubs announced Quintana’s activation from the injured list. To make room for Quintana on the 28-man active roster, Rex Brothers was optioned to the Alternate Site in South Bend.

Q has made two appearances this year, throwing six total innings and allowing four runs. He actually threw better than his numbers, as in his first outing against the Tigers, a run charged to him scored after he left the game. (It’s the difference between his ERA being 4.50 or 6.00.) He has nine strikeouts (of 24 batters faced) in those six innings, so that’s good.

Brothers has had two stints with the Cubs, making two appearances in July and one in September. Overall, he posted an 8.10 ERA in 3⅓ innings, with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Today’s game preview will post at 4:30 p.m. CT.
