Cubs roster move: Brailyn Marquez called up, Patrick Wisdom designated for assignment

The Cubs will have a lefty in the pen who can throw 100 miles per hour.

I didn’t think they’d do this for several reasons, but the Cubs have decided they want Brailyn Marquez’ 100 mile per hour fastball in their bullpen in the postseason.

Today, they called up the lefthanded Marquez from the team’s alternate site in South Bend. To make room for Marquez on the Cubs’ 28-man and 40-man rosters, Patrick Wisdom has been designated for assignment.

Marquez is 21 (will turn 22 in January) and was ranked as the organization’s top prospect by Baseball America entering the 2020 campaign. He had a 3.13 ERA last year in 22 starts between Single-A South Bend and Single-A Myrtle Beach, earning Midwest League All Star honors. He struck out 128 in 103⅔ innings in the minor leagues in 2019 (11.1 per nine innings) but joins the Cubs having never pitched above the Single-A level.

It’s a calculated risk. Hope it works. Marquez will be in uniform for Sunday’s game and will wear No. 61.
