Ian Happ is out of Friday’s Cubs lineup, but don’t sweat it

New, comments

So says manager David Ross.

There are a couple of Cubs notes I wanted to call your attention to before the normal pregame post goes up at 5 p.m. CT.

Ian Happ, as you know, fouled a ball off his face (sounds weird, I know) during Thursday’s game at Pittsburgh. He left the game. Later, X-rays were negative and he did not have any signs of a concussion.

He’s out of Friday’s lineup vs. the Cardinals, but manager David Ross says don’t worry too much:

Sounds like a day or two should do it. In the meantime, Kyle Schwarber will lead off tonight, with Cameron Maybin in center field.

If you’re concerned about Schwarber leading off because of what happened when Joe Maddon put him there at the beginning of 2017, I call your attention to this tweet showing that Schwarbs is a hot hitter lately:

Also, Ross announced how they’re going to handle Saturday’s games for starting pitchers:

Adbert Alzolay isn’t currently on the 28-man roster. He could be made the 29th man, but they are likely going to need him in the rotation going forward as Tyler Chatwood and Jose Quintana are out with no timetable for their return. I’d think Jason Adam would be optioned for Alzolay, though Adam could stick around to be the 29th man on Saturday.

Lastly — there’s a fair chance rain or storms could interrupt Sunday’s game. Just what they’d need, another postponement.

As always, we await developments.
