Cubs roster move: Matt Dermody recalled from South Bend

New, comments

The Cubs will have a new lefthander tonight.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

About two weeks ago, BCB’s Tim Huwe suggested that the Cubs should try lefthander Matt Dermody in the bullpen.

Tim will get his wish tonight, perhaps. The Cubs have called up Dermody and sent Tyson Miller back to the alternate site in South Bend. Adbert Alzolay, who was the 29th man for Saturday’s doubleheader, has also been returned to South Bend.

Dermody pitched briefly for the Blue Jays (28 appearances) in 2016 and 2017, then missed some time with Tommy John surgery. He was lights-out in five appearances this year for the indy league Sugar Land Skeeters, throwing 17⅓ innings with a 0.52 ERA, 1.096 WHIP and 23 strikeouts. The Cubs signed him to a minor-league deal exactly a month ago, August 6.

The Cubs could use another effective lefty in the pen, so why not? Dermody will be available tonight and will wear No. 45.

The Cubs’ 60-man Player Pool roster stands at 58 players, with 28 active players on the major league roster (plus three 10-day injured list players) in Chicago plus infielder Ildemaro Vargas and 26 players in South Bend. The club’s 40-man roster now stands at 40 players.

Tonight’s game preview will post at 4 p.m. CT.

Matt Dermody!
