Kyle Hendricks threw live BP Saturday instead of starting vs. the Brewers, which is why Shelby Miller got the start. Here’s what The Professor said:
“I can get the work in here,” Hendricks, sitting at a table next to Field 1 at the Cubs’ complex Saturday morning, said. “I think later in spring, if I were to be facing them when I had to go five, six innings — someone in the division — I’d just go do it. But, we just thought it’d be better just to control the situations.”
This is just how Spring Training works, basically. It’s about getting the work in.
Zach Davies should be set to start Monday in Mesa and Trevor Williams will go Tuesday, presuming everyone stays on the current schedule.
Here are today’s particulars.
Rizzo 1B, Contreras C, Bryant 3B, Baez SS, Heyward RF, Hoerner 2B, Martini LF, Ortega CF, Amaya DH
Good to see Javy back in the lineup, obviously the HBP that forced him out of Friday’s game was nothing serious.
Rojas LF, Marte SS, Escobar DH, Walker 1B, Cabrera 3B, Vogt C, VanMeter 2B, Thompson CF, Fairchild RF
Jake Arrieta will make his Cubs re-debut this afternoon. Other Cubs pitchers today: Adbert Alzolay, Andrew Chafin, Brandon Workman, Jason Adam, Robert Stock, Manuel Rodriguez and Jerry Vasto.
I don’t know what to read into Alzolay throwing in relief — they could be testing him for a hybrid bullpen/spot starter role.
Merrill Kelly will start for the D-backs. Other Arizona pitchers today: Josh Green, Joakim Soria, Chris Devenski, Kevin Ginkel and Humberto Castellanos.
Today’s game is on FSN Arizona with the D-backs announcers.
Please note that during spring training, Gameday doesn’t usually go pitch-by-pitch as it does during the regular season — usually, it will update after each at-bat.
Please visit our SB Nation Diamondbacks site AZ Snakepit. If you do go there to interact with D-backs fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.
For spring-training games, we’ll have a first-pitch thread at five minutes to game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). For today, that will be 2:05 p.m. CT and 3:30 p.m. CT.
These threads will not post individually onto the front page; instead, you can find links to them in the box marked ”Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page. There will also be a StoryStream on the front page with all the game thread links, as well as the recap after the game is over. The pitcher photos and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
