As noted here late Sunday, Cubs righthander Trevor Williams underwent an emergency appendectomy early Sunday morning. He’s out indefinitely.
Williams was the scheduled starter for Monday’s game against the Padres, but now has been placed on the 10-day injured list.
Recalled from Triple-A Iowa is righthander Kohl Stewart, who will make the start against San Diego. Stewart is on normal rest, as he last started for Iowa last Wednesday. There's been no official announcement from the Cubs, but Stewart is in today's starting lineup.
Stewart, who was signed by the Cubs as a free agent in January, made three spring training appearances for the team (9.82 ERA, though as you know spring numbers mean little), and has made four starts at Triple-A Iowa this year with a 3.68 ERA and 0.955 WHIP and 23 strikeouts in 22 innings.
Good luck to Stewart in his start Monday afternoon, and also best wishes to Trevor Williams for a speedy recovery from the appendectomy and hopefully a quick return to the Cubs’ starting rotation.
Today's game preview will post at 11:30 a.m. CT.
