Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs capsized the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland), 9-2. The win snapped Iowa’s seven-game losing streak.
Ryan Kellogg got the win in his Triple-A debut tonight. Kellogg pitched the first five innings and allowed one run on three hits. He walked two and struck out one.
Dee Strange-Gordon hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his second of the season. Gordon was 1 for 5.
DH Jacob Olson hit an RBI single in the second inning that tied the game 1-1. He also tacked on an insurance run with RBI double in the seventh. Olson was 3 for 4 with two doubles. He scored once and had the two RBI.
Second baseman Abiatal Avelino went 3 for 5 with two RBI and one run scored.
Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were trashed by the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 6-3. It was the Smokies’ eighth-straight defeat.
Starter Cam Sanders gave up a three-run home run to Izzy Wilson in the second inning, and that was all that was necessary for him to take the loss. Sanders allowed three runs on three hits over 4.2 innings. He walked four, hit one batter and struck out six.
Third baseman Chase Strumpf had two doubles in a 2 for 5 game.
DH Nelson Maldonado hit a two-run double in the fourth inning. He went 1 for 4.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs were snake bit by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 5-2.
Starter Max Bain struck out a career-high ten batters as he held the Rattlers to just one run on four hits over 5.1 innings. Bain walked two.
Jose Albertos relieved Bain and pitched 2.2 innings without allowing a run. He did give up two hits and walked one. He struck out two.
Eduarniel Nunez came on to get the save in the ninth inning and couldn’t throw strikes. He got the loss after surrendering three runs on one hit and three walks over two-thirds of an inning. Nunez also had four wild pitches in the inning. Of his 32 pitches, he threw only 13 strikes. Nunez struck out one. Two of the four runs he allowed were unearned.
Catcher Jake Washer gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning with an RBI double. He was 2 for 4.
Right fielder Yonathan Perlaza hit two doubles in a 2 for 4 game. He scored both South Bend runs.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans beat the Augusta Green Jackets (Braves), 6-2.
Starter Sam Thoreson gave up two runs on three hits over 3.1 innings. Thoreson struck out seven and walked three.
The win went to Didier Vargas in relief because Thoreson didn’t pitch five innings. Vargas did not allow a run over 2.2 innings. He gave up one hit and walked three. Vargas also struck out three.
Tyler Sullentrop entered the game with two on and two out in the ninth and got the save. He faced two batters and walked the first one and struck out the second one.
Shortstop Luis Verdugo hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his first of the season. Verdugo was 1 for 4 with a walk. He scored twice.
Right fielder Yohendrick Pinango was 3 for 5 and scored once.
Left fielder Jordan Nwogu was 2 for 5 with a stolen base. He scored two runs.
