Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were seized by the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland), 7-4.

Starter Cory Abbott took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. Two of the hits allowed by Abbott were home runs. He struck out four and walked two.

The I-Cubs scored four runs in the second inning to take an early lead, but that’s all they would score. Center fielder Trayce Thompson hit a two-run home run in the second, his ninth this season. Thompson went 2 for 5.

Michael Hermosillo left this game in the sixth inning with an apparent leg injury. He was 1 for 2 with a walk.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies recycled the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 12-8.

Starter Peyton Remy may have had better days, but he pitched well enough to get the win. Remy allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings. Most of the damage was done with a three-run home run in the first inning. Remy walked one and struck out four.

Ethan Roberts pitched a perfect ninth inning in a non-save situation. He struck out two.

DH Brennen Davis and center fielder Christopher Morel both hit two home runs tonight. Davis hit his first one with a man on in the third inning and connected again his next time up with two men on in the fourth inning. Davis was 2 for 5 with five RBI. He now has eight home runs on the year.

Morel also hit a two-run home run in the third inning and then tacked on some insurance runs with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth. Morel went 2 for 4 with a walk and four runs batted in. Morel scored three times. He has 12 home runs in 2021.

Catcher Cam Balego hit a two-run double in the second inning. Balego was 2 for 5 and scored once.

First baseman Nelson Maldonado was 1 for 4 with two walks and two runs scored.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were poisoned by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 7-2.

Ryan Jensen had been pitching brilliantly in July, but today he couldn’t make it out of the first inning today, getting pulled after 36 pitches. He took the loss after being charged with two runs on three hits over two-thirds of an inning. Jensen walked one and struck out one.

Bryan King pitched well in relief of Jensen, allowing just one run on five hits over 3.1 innings. King walked two and struck out three.

Left fielder DJ Artis hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his sixth this season and his third with South Bend. Artis was 1 for 4.

South Bend only had three hits today.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were bitten by the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays), 11-0.

Can we skip this one? No?

OK, Jose Miguel Gonzalez started and took the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits over four innings. Gonzalez walked three and struck out only one.

The Cubs signed right-hander Adam Heidenfelder out of Gary in the American Association in June and he made his affiliated ball debut tonight. It did not go well as Heidenfelder surrendered five runs on four hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning.

Catcher Ethan Hearn was 1 for 3 with a walk. Second baseman Luis Verdugo was 1 for 4 with a double.

The Pelicans had four hits tonight.
