Cubs roster move: Trevor Megill recalled from Iowa, Sergio Alcántara optioned

This was not the move you expected to happen today.

Matt Duffy was spotted during Wednesday night’s Cubs broadcast on Marquee Sports Network in the dugout in St. Louis, thus presumably presaging an activation from the injured list today.

After much speculation, some of it right here, that is not what happened. The Cubs decided they’d rather have another bullpen arm and not an extra infielder, with a quick turnaround from a night game in St. Louis today to a day game in Chicago tomorow.

Thus, Sergio Alcántara was optioned to Triple-A Iowa and righthander Trevor Megill was recalled. This gives the Cubs one more day, possibly more, to decide what to do with Duffy.

Alcántara has hit .171/.266/.354 (14-for-82) with three doubles, three triples and three home runs for the Cubs in 38 games this year. He’ll likely be back at some point, perhaps in September.

Megill has previously made five appearances for the Cubs this year with an 18.00 ERA and 4.000 WHIP. At Iowa he has a 5.14 ERA and 1.429 WHIP in 12 appearances covering 14 innings, with 20 strikeouts.

As always, we await developments. Today’s game preview will post at 4 p.m. CT.
