Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 28

Three wins in the Cubs system tonight. And Iowa got beaten by the Bats with baseball bats.

So I’m on vacation and the hotel wi-fi is terrible. So this is going to be more brief than normal.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were battered by the Louisville Bats (Reds) 17-5.

Joe Biagini was knocked around for seven runs on seven hits (including two home runs) over 4.1 innings. Biagini walked three and struck out seven.

Rowan Wick started his rehab assignment and his first official appearance of the year did not go well. Wick was hammered for five runs on two hits and three walks over a third of an inning. The one batter he did retire was by a strikeout.

Abiatal Avelino went 1 for 4 with a solo home run.

Caleb Knight hit a three-run pinch hit home run in the eighth inning.

Tony Wolters was 1 for 4 with a solo home run in the ninth.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies scored four runs in the third inning and beat the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 4-3.

Cam Sanders started and got the win. Sanders gave up three runs on six hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out nine, which is nice to see.

The save went to Cayne Ueckert. Ueckert allowed no runs and no hits over 1.1 innings. He walked one and struck out one.

First baseman Jared Young hit a two-run home run. He was 1 for 4.

DH Nelson Maldonado was 3 for 4 with one RBI.

Left fielder Darius Hill went 2 for 3 with a walk and one run scored.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs brought the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals) to justice, 11-4 in ten innings. Yes, they scored seven times in the top of the tenth.

Matteo Bocchi pitched the first four innings and gave up two runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out two.

The win went to Burl Carraway, who pitched the bottom of the ninth. He allowed no runs and no hits. Carraway walked one and struck out one.

Shortstop Delvin Zinn hit a two-run home run in the top of the tenth. He was 1 for 6 with three total RBI.

First baseman Tyler Durna was 2 for 5 with a walk. He had one RBI and one run scored.

Third baseman Jake Slaughter went 2 for 5. He also drove in one run and scored one run.

Second baseman Josue Huma was 1 for 3 with a three-run triple in the tenth. Huma also walked twice and scored three runs.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans made the Augusta GreenJackets (Braves) blue, 7-3.

Starter Jose Miguel Gonzalez got the win after giving up three runs on three hits over five innings. All three runs scored on two home runs. Gonzalez walked three and struck out six.

Left fielder Jordan Nwogu hit a solo home run in the second inning. He was a perfect 1 for 1 with four walks tonight. He scored three times.

DH Jonathan Sierra went 3 for 4 with a double. He scored two runs and drove in two runs.

Shortstop Kevin Made was 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI single
