Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: July 6

South Bend wins with a walk-off, but they are the only victory in the system tonight.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were cast out by the St. Paul Saints (Twins), 11-1.

Mike Hauschild started and got the loss. Hauschild allowed seven runs on five hits over 3.2 innings. Three of the five hits that he allowed were home runs. Hauschild walked three and struck out two.

Dillon Maples came on to pitch in the seventh inning in a rehab assignment. Maples pitched fine in the seventh (he walked one, one reached on an error), but when he came out to pitch the eighth, he failed to retire anyone. The final line on Maples was three runs on three hits over 1+ innings. Maples walked two and struck out one.

Left fielder Michael Hermosillo had an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to keep Iowa from being shut out. He was 2 for 5.

DH Trent Giambrone had two doubles in a 2 for 4 night. He also walked once.

Second baseman Abiatal Avelino went 0 for 2 with three walks.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies got spotted by the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 7-3.

Erich Uelmen had a rough start tonight, giving up seven runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings. Uelmen walked five, hit one batter and struck out three.

Pretty much all of Tennessee’s offense came from right fielder Brennen Davis, who hit three doubles tonight in a 3 for 4 game. Davis had two RBI, one in the seventh inning and one in the ninth. He scored the Smokies’ other run on a wild pitch in the seventh.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs bit the Beloit Snappers (Marlins), 7-6.

It was a bullpen game for South Bend tonight as Samuel Reyes pitched the first two innings. He allowed one run on a solo home run in the second inning. Reyes gave up two hits. He struck out two and did not walk anyone.

It was a rough night for Jose Albertos, who got knocked around for four runs on four hits over two innings. One of the runs was unearned. Albertos struck out two and walked one.

Graham Lawson pitched the top of the ninth inning and got his first professional win when South Bend scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Lawson gave up no runs or hits, but he did walk one batter. He struck out one as well.

First baseman Grayson Byrd singled home Delvin Zinn with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off win for South Bend. Byrd went 3 for 5 with two runs batted in.

Zinn was 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored twice.

Right fielder Nelson Velazquez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, his 11th on the season. Velazquez went 3 for 4 with a walk and three runs scored.

Third baseman Jake Slaughter was 2 for 4 with an RBI single.

Highlights:

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were stung by the Augusta Green Jackets (Braves), 3-1.

DJ Herz started and got the loss. Herz allowed three runs on three hits over three innings. Two of the three hits he allowed were solo home runs in the second inning. Herz walked two and struck out four.

The Pelicans had four hits tonight. Shortstop Ed Howard was 2 for 4 with the lone RBI. Third baseman Luis Verdugo went 2 for 3 and scored that lone run.

ACL Cubs

Lost to the Rockies, 13-7.

Reginald Preciado had three more hits tonight. He’s hitting .440/.548/.600 over seven games so far.
