Cubs roster move: Adbert Alzolay to injured list, Trevor Megill recalled

The Cubs starter was injured Friday night

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports

Adbert Alzolay suffered a hamstring injury Friday evening. In the recap to Friday’s game I noted that I thought it might have happened when he was running the bases.

That is not the case:

Mea culpa, I was wrong.

I’m still sorry that Alzolay suffered this injury and I would think, with only a little more than six weeks remaining in the 2021 season, this probably ends his year.

Trevor Megill was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take Alzolay’s place on the 26-man active roster.

Megill is in his fifth stint with the club this season, having made 12 relief appearances. He has allowed 13 runs in 8⅔ innings pitched, along with six walks and eight strikeouts. This season with Iowa, Megill has a 5.14 ERA with one save in 12 relief outings, walking eight and striking out 20 batters.

Someone will have to be recalled from Iowa to take Alzolay’s next turn in the rotation, which will come up Wednesday in Cincinnati. That’s likely Keegan Thompson, I suspect. As always, we await developments.
