Many here have called for outfielder Michael Hermosillo, who’s been crushing Triple-A pitching, a chance.
And I have recently called for Dan Winkler to be let go.
Now, both things have happened. Hermosillo has been recalled from Iowa and Winkler was DFA’d.
Hermosillo is hitting .306 (45-for-147) with 10 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs and 29 RBI in 43 games for Iowa this season. He has 26 walks to contribute to a .446 on-base percentage and a 1.038 OPS. He has a .313 average (15-for-48) with a 1.015 OPS against left-handed pitching and a .303 mark (30-for-99) with a 1.047 OPS against righthanders. Hermosillo has hit .286 (10-for-35) with a 1.079 OPS with runners in scoring position and has a .315 average (17-for-54) with two outs in an inning.
Winkler pitched well in the first half — 2.32 ERA in 31 innings. But since the All-Star break he’s been just awful: 15.58 ERA and 2.654 WHIP in 12 outings.
The Cubs will have an extra position player as a result, but will need to add a pitcher, most likely, to start Wednesday’s game. As always, we await developments.
