Cubs roster moves: David Bote to IL, Alfonso Rivas and Scott Effross called up

And say goodbye to Jake Jewell and Ryan Meisinger.

David Bote sprained his right ankle in a bizarre mishap during batting practice Friday when he tripped over a baseball on the sideline at Guaranteed Rate Field.

He'll now get at least 10 days to rest that ankle, as he's headed to the injured list.

Called up to replace Bote on the active roster is first baseman Alfonso Rivas from Triple-A Iowa. Rivas is hitting. 284/.405/.411 in 58 games at Iowa.

Also called up is righthanded reliever Scott Effross, a onetime teammate of Kyle Schwarber at Indiana University. I have a sort of six-degrees connection to Effross as his mom was a high school classmate of a college friend of mine. I met his parents a couple years ago at a spring training game, nice people.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Rivas and Effross, Jake Jewell and Ryan Meisinger were designated for assignment. I'm sure they're nice guys too, but in a few months you won't remember them.

Rivas and Effross will both be making their MLB debuts when they play in their first game for the Cubs.
