Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs lost by the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals), 7-1.
Cory Abbott had a rough start today, getting rocked for seven runs on eight hits over just 4.1 innings. Four of those eight hits were home runs. He somehow struck out Bobby Witt Jr. three times in three at-bats, however. Abbott struck out nine and walked two.
Brendon Little threw two innings of perfect relief, striking out three.
DH Greg Deichmann singled home Ian Miller in the bottom of the eighth for Iowa’s only run. Deichmann was 2 for 4. Miller was 1 for 3 with a walk.
Tennessee Smokies
Add DJ Artis, Wyatt Short and Garrett Kelly to the injured list.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs mauled the Peoria Chiefs (Cardinals), 7-4.
Starting pitcher Max Bain gave up three runs on four hits over five innings. Two of the runs were unearned after a two-out error in the fourth by third baseman Jake Slaughter. Bain struck out six and walked no one.
Tyler Santana got his first professional win, although it came after a blown save. Santana allowed one run on four hits over two innings. Santana struck out one and did not walk anyone.
Bryan King got his first professional save. King pitched two innings and gave up three hits but no runs. He walked two, hit one bater and struck out one.
Right fielder Yonathan Perlaza was perfect at the plate tonight, going 3 for 3 with a double and a walk. He had an RBI single in the seventh inning and then score his one run later that inning by Pablo Aliendo.
Aliendo went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly and three total RBI.
Left fielder Yohendrick Pinango was 2 for 5 with a double.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans extinguished the Columbia Fireflies (Royals), 6-2.
DJ Herz picked up the win after allowing just one run and two hits over the first 5.1 innings. Herz issued two walks, hit one batter and struck out five.
Bailey Reid threw two perfect innings to close out the game in a non-save situation. He struck out three.
Shortstop Ed Howard was the big bat tonight as he hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning. He also walked with the bases loaded in the fourth inning, giving him four total RBI in the game. Howard went 1 for 2 with two walks.
Third baseman Josue Huma went 2 for 3 and also walked with the bases loaded in the fourth for one total RBI.
Center fielder Christian Franklin got on base the hard way, getting hit by a pitch twice. He went 1 for 3 with a stolen base and one run scored.
