Among the flurry of trades that the Cubs made last month, there was at least one surprise.
No, not that Jake Marisnick was among the players traded; that none of the trades were with the Texas Rangers.
Until last Friday, the Cubs had made as many trades since 2000 with the Rangers, 15, as with any other team.
Now Texas ranks second, as the July 26 swap that sent Andrew Chafin to Oakland was the Cubs' 16th with the A's since 2000, according to transactions data at baseball-reference.com
ALMOST 200 TRADES
In calculating the number of trades between the Cubs and each of the 29 other teams, I counted only exchanges of players, including players to be named later (PTBNL), not purchases.
By that measurement, since 2000 the Cubs have made 198 trades: 109 with American League teams and 89 with National League rivals.
Here is the number of trades the Cubs have made with each team, ranked from most to fewest:
10: Red Sox and Tigers
9: Braves, Mariners, Nationals, Orioles and Rockies
7: Diamondbacks and Dodgers
6: Angels, Brewers, Pirates and Yankees
5: Giants, Rays and Royals
4: Cleveland, Reds, Twins and White Sox
3: Astros and Blue Jays
1: Cardinals and Phillies
(Total for Nationals includes those made when they were Expos)
RYNO ON THEIR MIND?
The only trade with the Phillies was Aug. 7, 2008, when the Cubs swapped Scott Eyre to Philadelphia for Brian Schlitter.
The previous trade between the teams was Dec. 23, 1997, Mickey Morandini for Doug Glanville
Maybe the Phillies still are reluctant to trade with the Cubs because of he deal they made Jan. 27, 1982: Ivan DeJesus to the Phillies for Ryne Sandberg and Larry Bowa -- one of the great deals in Cubs history, sort of the antithesis of Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio.
NOT IN THE CARDS
The most recent trade between the Cubs and Cardinals came on Aug. 25, 2002, when they shipped Jeff Fassero for two players to be named later. The deal before that was Aug. 16, 1995, when the Cubs obtained Todd Zeile for Mike Morgan and two minor leaguers.
And the one before that was was way back on Dec. 9, 1980, when they got Leon Durham, Ken Reitz and Ty Walls for future Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter.
LONG TIME, NO DEAL
Until the deadline deal on Friday involving Kris Bryant, the Cubs and Mets had not pulled the trigger since Jan. 5, 2008, when the Cubs exchanged Corey Coleman for Angel Pagan. The Cubs had purchased Pagan from the Mets less than 2 years earlier, on Jan. 25, 2006.
2 DAYS, 2 SWAPS
Beginning on July 30, 1998, the Cubs and White Sox had agreed on just 2 trades in almost 23 years: Neal Cotts to the Cubs for David Aardsma and a minor league on Nov. 16, 2006, then Jose Quintana to the Cubs for 4 minor leaguers on July 13, 2017.
Last week, they made 2 trades in as many days. On Thursday, the Cubs sent Ryan Tepera to the Sox for minor leaguer Bailey Horn. On Friday, they dispatched closer Craig Kimbrel to the South Side for second baseman Nick Madrigal and reliever Codi Heuer.
MOST WITH AL WEST
Major League teams generally are reluctant to make trades with divisional rivals.
That certainly has been true of the Cubs.
Since 2000, they have made only 17 with the 4 other members of the NL Central rivals: 6 each with the Brewers and Pirates, 4 with the Reds and 1 with the Cardinals.
Meanwhile, they have made 49 with teams in the AL West, 39 with those in NL West, 33 with clubs in both the AL East and NL East, and 28 with those in the AL Central.
Their trades since the season began broke down this way: 2 with the AL Central (both with the White Sox), 2 with the NL East (Braves and Mets), 2 with the NL West (Giants and Padres) and 1 with the AL West (Athletics).
BREAKDOWN BY TRADE PARTNER
Here, grouped by division, are the number of trades that the Cubs have made with each team since 2000, the last trade made and the most significant recent trade with that team. The count includes only trades, not purchases. Significance is weighted toward the player obtained.
