Today, the Cubs placed Heyward on the 7-day concussion injured list, retroactive to Sunday, and brought up outfielder Trayce Thompson from Triple-A Iowa. To make room on the 40-man roster for Thompson, outfielder Michael Hermosillo was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Thompson is 30 and was acquired from the Diamondbacks May 11 for a cash consideration and in 98 games for Iowa has hit .233/.344/.492 (71-for-305) with 14 doubles, one triple, 21 home runs, 63 RBI and 45 walks. The right-handed hitter has batted .294 (10-for-34) with two doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI in 10 September contests.

In the major leagues Thompson has hit .206/.276/.389 (110-for-535) in 202 games with the White Sox, Dodgers and Athletics from 2016-20. He is the younger brother of Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors of the NBA and both are sons of former NBA player Mychal Thompson.

Trayce Thompson will be available for tonight’s game against the Phillies. When he appears, he will become the 64th player to play for the Cubs in 2021, extending the franchise record.
