Cubs catcher Willson Contreras has been on the injured list since August 12 with what was described as a right knee sprain.

After spending three games with the Iowa Cubs on a rehab assignment, Contreras was activated for Saturday’s game against the Pirates at Wrigley Field. To make room for him on the 28-man current active roster, Keegan Thompson has been placed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

Contreras went 2-for-11, both home runs, in the three-game rehab stint. With the Cubs this year, Contreras is hitting .226/.333/.417 (78-for-345) with 17 home runs in 104 games.

Thompson is 3-3 with one save, a 3.54 ERA, 28 walks and 48 strikeouts in 30 games (four starts) for the Cubs in his major league debut season.
