Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: September 4

Jordan Nwogu has a big game for the Pelicans. DJ Herz has a successful debut for South Bend.

A reminder that tomorrow night’s South Bend Cubs game will be televised on Marquee, starting at 6pm Chicago Time. Cubs first-round pick Jordan Wicks is scheduled to make his professional debut in this game.

Iowa Cubs

Rained out in Indianapolis. They’ll play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies had their mission cancelled by the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 5-4.

Starter Dakota Chalmers gave up two runs in the first, one in the second and two in the third to take the loss. His final line was five runs on four hits over 3.1 innings. Two of those four hits were home runs. Chalmers walked four and struck out seven.

Third baseman Christopher Morel hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to get the Smokies to within a run, but they would not score again,. It was Morel’s 16th home run this season. Morel was 1 for 4.

Right fielder Brennen Davis was 2 for 3 with a walk. He scored one run.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs sunk the Lake County Captains (Guardians), 6-3.

DJ Herz made his High-A debut into a successful one. He got the win after allowing just one unearned run on three hits over five innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

Hunter Bigge pitched his first game after a month on the IL and it was similarly successful. He threw one inning, the eighth, and retired the side in order. He struck out one.

The save went to Bailey Reid after Danis Correa walked the first four batters of the top of the ninth inning. Correa did retire the next two batters before giving way to Reid, who got a bases-loaded force out at second to end the game, which was the only batter he faced.

Shortstop Luis Vazquez went 2 for 4 with two runs batted in.

Third baseman Jake Slaughter was 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Right fielder Yonathan Perlaza similarly wen a 2 for 3 with a walk and scored twice.

Second baseman Bryce Windham was 1 for 2 with two walks and two runs scored. He also had one RBI.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans neutered the Lynchburg Hillcats (Guardians), 2-1.

Daniel Palencia, who came over in the Andrew Chafin deal, started and allowed just one run on three hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked two.

The win went to reliever Luis Angel Rodriguez, who was making his Myrtle Beach debut. He pitched the final two innings and did not allow a hit or a walk. Rodriguez did walk one while striking out four.

Left fielder Jordan Nwogu was today’s hero, going 4 for 4 with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning that turned out to be the difference. It was Nwogu’s tenth home run this year. Nwogu drove in both of the Pelicans’ runs as he had an RBI single in the third inning.

DH Owen Caissie and first baseman Jonathan Sierra were both 2 for 4.
