Win streak week, Day 4

The Cubs have played 417 regular-season games against the Brewers

They have played 2,217, more than 5 times as many, against the Dodgers.

Yet their longest winning streak in a single season against each rival is the same: 9 games.

The did it against the Brewers in 2015.

They have done it 4 times against the Dodgers: in 1906, 1908, 1927 and 1929.

Since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles, in 1958, the Cubs have beaten them as many as 6 times in a row just once, in 1971.

...

The Cubs' longest streak against the Padres in a single season is 8 games, in 1979.

Their single-season high also is 8 against the Pirates, whom they have faced 2,582 times -- 5 times more often.

The Pirates were known as the Alleghenys when the Cubs beat them 8 straight times in 1890, Pittsburgh's first year in National League. The Cubs won in a row from them again in 2004.

...

Those are among a number of interesting facts that I uncovered while researching the Cubs' single- and multi-season streaks against their National League rivals.

..........

DOUBLE-DIGIT STREAKS

The Cubs have won at least 10 straight games vs. an NL opponent 31 times: 23 in the same season, 8 spanning seasons.

The first was in 1876-77, when they took 11 in a row against Cincinnati, sweeping 10 games the first year and winning the first meeting of the second.

The most recent was in 2007-08, when they won 10 straight against Pittsburgh, the final 3 and the first 7.

Since then, the Cubs won 9 in a row against the Mets in 2014-15 and 2017-18, and against the Brewers, all in 2015.

...

Of the 31 double-digit streaks, 23 were achieved vs. current NL rivals -- all against the 7 other teams that were in the league between 1901 and 1961.

The remaining 8 streaks were 1 each against teams that were in the NL before the Modern Era.

None were against American League teams.

...

Here is the breakdown of double-digit streaks by opponent, ranked by number of such streaks. The number of streaks that took place in a single season is shown in parentheses:

5: Braves (4)

5: Cardinals (4)

5: Reds (2)

4: Phillies (2)

2: Pirates (0)

1: Dodgers (0)

1: Giants (1)

1: Buffalo Bisons (0) [in NL, 1879-85]

1: Cincinnati Reds (0) [1876-79]

1: Cleveland Spiders (1) [1889-99]

1: Detroit Wolverines (0)[1881-88]

1: Kansas City Cowboys (1) [1886]

1: St. Louis Maroons (1) [1885-86]

1: Washington Nationals (1) [1886-89]

1: Washington Senators (1) [1892-99]

...

In addition to the 8 streaks of at least 10 games vs. defunct teams, the Cubs had 1 each before 1901 against the Giants, Phillies and Pirates, for a total of 11 streaks prior to the Modern Era and 20 since it began.
