Cubs' comeback wins vs. blown-lead losses

The 2022 Cubs are a little more than 2 weeks away from setting a highly undesirable franchise record.

Through Sunday, they have lost 46 games in which they led at some point.

That ties them with last year's club for their fourth-most blown-lead losses in any season.

This year, they have come from behind to win 21 games -- 25 fewer such wins than blown-lead losses.

They never have had more than 23 fewer such wins than losses in any season since 1915, first year for which baseball-reference.com has data on comebacks and blown-lead losses.

...

The Cubs were -23, with 20 comeback wins and 43 blown-lead losses, in 1962, when they finished 59-103.

That was 6 more than the previous worst difference, -17, in 1921 (24 wins, 41 losses), when they went 64-89.

They matched the -23 performance in 2013 (20 wins, 43 losses), en route to a 66-96 record.

BEST DIFFERENCE

The Cubs have finished 2 seasons with 21 more comeback wins than blown-lead losses.

They had 46 wins and 25 losses in 1929, when they won the pennant at 98-54-4.

They had 48 wins and 27 losses in 2018, when they wound up 95-63 after losing a showdown with the Brewers for the division title.

In 1918, another pennant-winning season, they were +20 (26 wins, 6 losses) and finished 84-45-2.

...

Through 2021, the Cubs had more blown-lead losses than comeback wins in 56 seasons, the same number in 5 seasons, and more comeback wins than blown-lead losses in 46.

They had at least 10 more such losses than wins in 19 previous seasons; at least 10 more wins than losses, in 13.

..

Over all 108 seasons, including this one, the Cubs have come from behind in 3,394 wins and have blown leads in 3,551 losses.

That is an average of 31 such wins and 33 such losses.

(Caveat: baseball-reference says, "Stats relying on play-by-play data are complete back to 1973, mostly complete back to 1950, and somewhat complete back to 1915.")
