Welcome to today’s episode of Cub Tracks news and notes™, a greatest-hits collection of Chicago-style beat writers and bloggers, ground from #Cubs, #MiLB, and #MLB baseball, overheated, steeped in writers’ tears, and then cold-brewed overnight for maximum flavor.
On the front page, Andy Green wasn’t fired, but he still has a new position. Oh, the intrigue! Wow fun. In any event, Green’s now a Met. Neat.
Also, Johnny Washington news. And MLB.com has kindly provided a full list of non-tendered players. Patrick Wisdom is making $2.725 million in 2024 according to Jesse Rogers, and Jordan Bastian.
Adbert Alzolay, Mark Leiter Jr., Nick Madrigal, Julian Merryweather, Justin Steele and Mike Tauchman have already been tendered contracts. A couple of those guys had me fence-sitting, too.
Christopher Morel has also been playing left field in the DSL {$}. The mention is near the bottom of the interesting article.
But wait! There’s more, in this episode of Cub Tracks.

- Tyler Schickert (Reviewing the Brew*): Could Craig Counsell have picked a worse team to manage for than the Cubs? “Of all the teams the former Brewers manager could have gone to, why did it have to be that one?”
- Chad Jennings (The Athletic {$}): MLB non-tender deadline: 10 most interesting players added to baseball’s free-agent pool. Daniel Vogelbach!
- Evan Altman (Cubs Insider*): Cubs may be Dodgers’ only real competition for Shohei Ohtani, who should generate $100M annual revenue. ”The huge news on the North Side as well… Shohei Ohtani,” Bruce Levine said.
- Maddie Lee (Chicago Sun-Times*): Cody Bellinger honed his consistency with the Cubs, making him a top free agent. “As expected, Bellinger rejected a qualifying offer from the Cubs this week.”
- Alexander Patt (Cubbies Crib*): Chicago Cubs keep Patrick Wisdom for cheap power depth. “There is nothing we don’t know about Wisdom. He is who he is, and that is not going to change.”
- Jonathan Mayo (MLB.com*): Keep an eye on these prospects added to 40-man rosters. “... an international or high school Draft pick signed in 2019 had to be protected. A college player taken in the 2020 Draft was in the same position.”
- Maddie Lee (Chicago Sun-Times*): Coaches Johnny Washington, Andy Green leave Cubs to join Angels, Mets. “The Angels hired Washington as hitting coach, and sources confirmed Green is set to join the Mets front office.”
- Mark W. Sanchez (NY Post*): Mets hire ex-Cubs coach Andy Green for senior player development role. “As a player, Green appeared in four games with the Mets in 2009.”
- Jeff Fletcher (The Orange County Register*): Angels add hitting coach Johnny Washington. “The Long Beach native had been the Chicago Cubs’ assistant hitting coach for the past two seasons.”
