Cubs trade target: Tyler Glasnow

The Cubs could use a starting pitcher. Here’s a good one.

The Tampa Bay Rays are almost certainly going to trade Tyler Glasnow this offseason.

How do I know this?

Because Glasnow is scheduled to make $25 million and is a free agent at the end of the 2024 season. This is how the Rays replenish their farm system — trade away veteran stars just before they hit free agency.

Glasnow missed a fair amount of time before 2023 with various injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2021. He came back from that for two good starts at the end of 2022 and, though he missed time with an oblique injury in 2023, had a good year: 3.53 ERA and 1.083 WHIP in 21 starts, good for 2.0 bWAR. That’s probably a 3 WAR season if he’s 100 percent healthy.

He’s pitched in four postseasons for the Rays, though not particularly well (5.72 ERA in 10 postseason starts). During the regular season, though, his career strikeout rate (11.5 per nine innings) and walk rate (3.6 per nine innings) are both quite good, and they were better than that in 2023 (12.2 and 2.8, respectively).

Trading for Glasnow would only guarantee the Cubs one year of his services, and he’s 30. Would he then be worth signing to a three- or four-year extension?

Many of you have not liked my suggestions on who to trade for various players so far in this series. So I’m throwing the proverbial floor open to you. Would you trade for Glasnow, and if so, who would you send to Tampa Bay? Last week this fake tweet appeared:

Just to make it clear: That’s not from the real Jed Hoyer, and that’s not a real offer.

Or could it be? The Rays would probably want more than Thompson pitching-wise. What do you think?

Lastly, Glasnow and Jameson Taillon were Pirates teammates in 2016 and 2017, and for the first four months of 2018 until Glasnow was traded to the Rays. The Pirates were actually halfway decent those three seasons, averaging 79 wins a year. Would a Glasnow/Taillon reunion on the 2024 Cubs make sense?
