Outside The Confines: 700 million

Shohei Ohtani has picked his team and it where we expected for more than we expected. Fallout from that decision throughout the league. And a few other bits of MLB news.

I never thought the chances of Shohei Ohtani coming to the Cubs were very good. The Dodgers had been planning to sign him for at least two years now. He was already familiar with Southern California and the Dodgers are in the playoffs every year, which is, beyond money, what he was looking for. Japanese players also generally have a preference for the West Coast, although as Seiya Suzuki showed, that’s not universal. But I always thought that as long as the Dodgers met the price he was looking for, he was going there no matter how much money anyone else offered.

I do admit that I had some creeping doubt when that whole “Shark Tank” guy is flying to Toronto thing broke out, but even then I still thought he was more likely to end up with the Dodgers.

But man, I do feel sorry for those of you who talked yourself into the idea that the Cubs were going to get Ohtani.

And tomorrow will be a better day than today, Buster.
