Cubs sign Jorge Alfaro to a minor-league deal

Look! A signing!

Who says the Cubs aren’t signing anyone?

Jorge Alfaro was once a pretty good-hitting catcher. In 2019 with the Marlins he batted .262/.312/.425 with 18 home runs. Since the pandemic year of 2020, though, Alfaro’s offense has taken a nose dive. Last year, he played only 18 games at the MLB level and batted just .146/.212/.292, split between the Rockies and Red Sox.

This is a depth signing. As of now, there’s no reason to think that the Cubs catchers on Opening Day will be anyone other than Yan Gomes and Miguel Amaya. If Alfaro can possibly hit, even a little, he’ll be the “break glass in case of emergency” catcher at Triple-A Iowa. He’s generally been a good defender over his career, though he’s led his league in passed balls three times, for whatever that’s worth.

Alfaro is 30, so this move won’t block any other minor leaguers coming up through the system.

As always, we await developments.
