Cubs who had strange batting lines

Trey Mancini's line in the box score of the Cubs' 10-4 win over the Cardinals last Wednesday was:

1 AB, 3 R, 1 H, 0 RBI

Mancini walked with 1 out in the second and was stranded at second.

He singled leading off the fourth and scored moments later, on a first-pitch home run by Yan Gomes.

He singled to start the sixth, went to second on a hit by Gomes and came home on a double by Christopher Morel.

He walked with 1 out in the seventh, reached second on an infield hit by Gomes and raced home on a single by Morel.

..........

JUST ONCE BEFORE

The Cubs had played 19,054 previous games since 1901.

Exactly 1 player had had the same batting line: Rick Wilkins, on May 8, 1995.

Wilkins also did it against the Cardinals, but at St. Louis, in a 7-4 victory.

He singled with 1 out in the second, moved up on a walk and a single, and scored on a wild pitch.

He walked leading off the fourth, went to third on a single by Jose Hernandez and came home as Tuffy Rhodes grounded into a double play.

He walked with 1 out an a runner on second in the sixth, then made it to second on an infield hit by Hernandez that loaded the bases. He went to third on a sacrifice fly by Rhodes, then scored on a single by pitcher Jim Bullinger.

He walked with 2 out in the seventh, loading the bases, before Hernandez flied out.

He walked with 2 out in the ninth, putting runners on second and third, then Hernandez grounded out.

...

The ninth-inning walk was Wilkins' fourth.

Mancini had 3.

So, Wilkins was the first Cub ever to make only 4 trips to plate, make a hit in his only official at bat, score 3 runs and have no runs batted in!

HISTORIC HOLIDAY

On July 4, 2016, Kris Bryant walked and scored the Cubs' first run in the bottom of the first against the Reds.

He hit a 2-run homer in the second, then walked in the fourth and was 1 of 2 runners who scored on a 2-out throwing error by the third baseman.

In the fifth, with the score 8-0, Bryant was lifted for a pinch hitter. The Cubs went on to win, 10-4.

Bryant is the only Cub ever to score 3 runs in just 3 plate appearances, including a hit in his only at bat, and to drive in any runs.

...

3 others have done it in 4 plate appearances:

Vic Saier, on May 14, 1915, at Brooklyn: triple, 3 walks, 1 RBI

Eddie Zambrano, on May 28, 1994, at Atlanta: single, 3 walks, 1 RBI

Mark DeRosa, on Aug. 15, 2008, at Miami: homer, 3 walks, 2 RBI

...

4 more have done it in 5 PA:

Heinie Zimmerman, Sept. 26, 1912, at home vs. Reds: single, 2 walks, 2 sacrifices, 2 RBI

Howard Freigau, April 30, 1926, at home vs. Cardinals: single, 4 walks, 1 RBI

Billy Jurges, July 18, 1938, at home vs. Braves: single, 3 walks, sacrifice, 1 RBI

Anthony Rizzo, April 30, 2014, at Cincinnati: homer, 4 walks, 2 RBI

HISTORIC BIRTHDAY

On Aug. 30, 1930, the Cubs routed the visiting Cardinals, 16-4.

Kiki Cuyler, celebrating his 32nd birthday, walked in the second and scored on a home run by Hack Wilson.

He walked again in the second and was forced out.

He walked and scored in the fourth on another homer by Wilson.

He walked leading off the sixth, went to second and third on sacrifice flies, and scored on a single by High Pockets Kelly.

He doubled in the eighth, sending a runner to third. He stayed at second on an infield single, loading the bases. The next batter hit a fly to left, on which the runner from third tagged up and headed home. When the outfielder's throw skipped past the catcher, Cuyler scored, too.

That made him the only Cub to go 1 for 1 and score 4 runs.

..........

RARE PAIR

Remarkably, 2 Cubs have gone 1 for 1 and scored 5 runs.

Both had a double and 4 walks.

...

The first was Jimmy Sheckard, on June 11, 1911, during a 20-2 demolition of the Rustlers, today's Braves.

Here is how he did it:

1st inning: walked, scored on homer by Heinie Zimmerman

2nd: doubled, driving in run, then scored on double by Frank Schulte

4th: walked, advanced to third on error followed by bunt, scored on fly ball dropped by left fielder

6th: walked, went to second on hit and scored on double by Jimmy Archer

7th: walked, loading bases, and scored on triple by Schulte.

...

No one duplicated that feat for nearly 76 years, until Jody Davis, on June 3, 1987, in a 22-7 crushing of the Astros.

After Rick Sutcliffe served up a 2-run homer in the top of the first, the Cubs erupted for 9 runs in the bottom.

Davis walked with 1 out, loading the bases, and trotted home on a grand slam by Brian Dayett.

Davis walked leading off the second, sent to third on a double by Dayett and scored on a wild pitch.

He walked with 1 out in the third, went to second on a walk to Dayett and scored on a single by Keith Moreland.

Davis led off the fifth with a walk. A walk to Dayett, 2 outs and another walk loaded the bases. A single by pinch hitter Gary Matthews knocked in Davis and Dayett.

Davis double with 1 out in the sixth and a runner on second. A walk to Dayett set the stage for a grand slam by Moreland.

Davis was due up with 2 out and runner on first in the seventh, but Jim Sundberg pinch hit for him.

Sundberg smacked the Cubs' sixth home run of the day, making it the only game since 1901 in which the Cubs have had at least 1 of each type of homer: solo, 2-run, 3-run and grand slam.

7 Cubs combined for 21 RBI, led by Moreland's 7. Davis had none.

..........

Woody English went 1 for 2, a single; walked 4 times, and scored 5 runs in a 17-3 win at home over the Phillies on Aug. 18, 1930.

Each of the 10 other Cubs who scored 5 runs had at least 3 at bats, and each had at least 3 hits, except for Bill Madlock, who doubled, homered, walked twice and was safe on error as the Cubs throttled the Phillies, 18-9, on April 17, 1974.

..........

DECEPTIVE BATTING LINE

Ron Santo's batting line in a 3-4 loss at Philadelphia on June 1, 1966 was:

0 AB, 0 R, 0 H, 0 RBI

Yet Santo played the entire game, the first 7 innings at shortstop, and came to the plate 5 times.

2nd: walked leading off and was stranded at third

4th: walked leading off and was erased in a double play

5th: hit by a pitch with 2 out, loading the bases; next 2 batters popped up and grounded out

7th: walked with 2 out, stole second and was stranded

9th: walked with 1 out and forced out

After the forceout, the runner from first was thrown out at home on a double, ending the game.

..........

4 PA, 0 AB, 4 TIMES ON BASE

3 Cubs walked in all 4 of their plate appearances, none in nearly 60 years. Each had 4 walks:

Charlie Grimm, April 17, 1932, in 4-1 win at St. Louis

Bill Serena, Aug. 16, 1953 in 2-6 loss at home to Braves

Andre Rodgers, July 31, 1963, in 3-2 win at Milwaukee

...

10 more had no at bats in 4 PA and reached base 3 times, from Frank Chance in 1905 to Mark Grace in 1998.

Zeb Terry (1922) and Doug Dascenzo (1991) scored 2 runs.

Stan Hack (1942), Phil Cavarretta (1944) Ryne Sandberg (1991) and Grace scored once.

Harry Chiti (1955), Sandberg and Grace had 1 RBI.

..........

3 PA, 0 AB, 3 TIMES ON BASE

20 batters had no at bats and 3 PA, including 10 who reached base 3 times, from Jock Menefee in 1902 to Addison Russell in 2015.

Dave Hansen (1997) and Jeff Blauser (1998) are the only others since the start of 1979.

All walked 3 times except Menefee (1 walk, 2 HBP) and Jimmy Archer (2 walk, 1 HBP).

Of the 10, Billy Jurges was the only one to score twice. Menefee and Solly Hofman (1911) did not score. The 6 others scored once.

...

The lone Cub to reach base in 3 PA with no at bats and have an RBI was Rick Stelmaszek, who drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning of a 7-4 win at Philadelphia on Sept. 19, 1974.

He walked in the third and made a bunt in the fifth, then was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh.

Stelmaszek, a 25-year-old catcher, was a Chicago native. He had played 35 games for the Senators/Rangers and Angeles in 1971 and 1973.

The game at Philadelphia was his 21st as a Cub. He played in only 4 more, ending the season with a slash line of .227/.364/.341, with 2 doubles, a homer, 7 RBI, 17 walks and 18 strikeouts.

He spent 1975 with the Cubs' Class AAA team in Wichita, Kan., then was with farm clubs of the Yankees, Rangers and Twins the next 3 years before retiring.

..........

1 AB, 5 TIMES ON BASE

21 Cubs have had 1 at bat and were on base 5 times.

All did it in 5 plate appearances except Elrod Hendricks, who had 6.

Hendricks fouled out to the catcher his first time up against the Mets at Wrigley Field on Sept. 16, 1972. Then he walked 5 times.

Each of the 20 others had 1 hit. The 6 who did it this century:

Hee-Seop Choi, April 16, 2003, at home vs. Reds (homer, 4 walks)

Ryan Theriot, Sept. 29, 2009, at home vs. Pirates (single, 4 walks)

Carlos Pena, Sept. 3, 2011, at home vs. Pirates (double, 3 walks, hit by pitch)

Anthony Rizzo, April 30, 2014, at Cincinnati (homer, 4 walks)

Kris Bryant, May 4, 2015, at St. Louis (single, 4 walks)

Javier Baez, April 5, 2018 (single, 3 walks, hit by pitch)

...

Choi and Rizzo were the only 2 among the 20 whose hit was a homer.

7 had a double; 11, a single.

14 had 4 walks. The 6 with 3 were Frank Chance (1907), Norm McMillan (1929), Phil Cavarretta (1946), Steve Swisher (1975), Pena and Rizzo.
