Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: June 2

Wins for Tennessee and South Bend.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were frightened by the Louisville Bats (Reds), 4-2.

Jordan Wicks started this game on a rehab assignment and threw 65 pitches over 3.1 innings. Wicks got the loss after he was tagged for three runs, two earned, on two hits. Wicks walked two and struck out three.

Keegan Thompson threw two innings of scoreless relief in a rehab assignment. He gave up one hit and walked one while striking out four. Thompson also hit one batter.

Daniel Palencia retired the side in order on nine pitches in the seventh inning. He struck out one.

The I-Cubs had just four hits today. DH Darius Hill was 2 for 3 and scored on a wild pitch in the ninth inning.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies burned down the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds), 6-4.

Starter Kyle McGowin got the win after pitching five innings and allowing two runs on four hits, including a solo home run. McGowin struck out seven and did not walk anyone, although he did hit one batter.

Shortstop Josh Rivera hit a three-run home run as a part of a five-run second inning. It was Rivera’s fourth home run this season. He went 1 for 2 with a walk.

Later on in the second, second baseman Matt Shaw connected on a solo home run, his sixth of the season. Shaw was 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored twice.

Five of the Smokies seven hits came in the second inning.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs apprehended the Quad Cities River Bandits (Royals), 5-2.

Tyler Schlaffer pitched the first 4.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits. Schlaffer also walked four batters while striking out three.

Because Schlaffer didn’t go five innings, the win was awarded to Nick Hull, who pitched three innings of relief without allowing a run. Hull gave up two hits but didn’t walk anyone. He struck out four.

Jose Romero struck out the side in order in the ninth for the save.

Third baseman Reivaj Garcia was 2 for 5. He scored one run and drove in one.

Right fielder Jordan Nwogu was 1 for 2 with two walks. He bloop single in the first inning scored two runs. Nwogu also stole a base and scored once.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were bitten by the Charleston RiverDogs (Rays) 7-4.

Alfredo Romero gave up a run in the first inning, a run in the second and four more in the third. His final line was six runs on four hits and four walks over 2.1 innings. Romero struck out two.

DH Alfonsin Rosario was 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez went 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored one run.

Catcher Frank Hernandez was 2 for 3 with two walks. He scored once and drove in one run.

Right fielder Ismael Mena was 2 for 3 with a walk.

Second baseman Alexis Hernandez had a rough game. He was 0 for 5 (the only Pelican without a hit) and two errors. He also struck out as the potential winning run with the bases loaded to end the game. He did have an RBI groundout in the fifth.
