Riley Thompson started and got the win after pitching five innings and surrendering two runs, both unearned, on four hits. Thompson walked two and struck out three.

Jorge López pitched one scoreless inning, Michael Arias pitched two innings and Hunter Bigge pitched the ninth and got the save. Bigge struck out all three batters in the ninth.

First baseman Matt Mervis was 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored in the second inning.

Left fielder Darius Hill was 1 for 3 with an RBI double.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies came from behind to stun the Mississippi Braves, 5-4.

Starter Matthew Thompson went four innings and gave up two runs on four hits. Both runs scored on a two-run home run by Tyler Tolve in the fourth. Thompson walked three batters, hit one and struck out five.

Edurniel Nunez pitched a perfect top of the ninth and got the win when the Smokies walked it off in the bottom of the inning. Nunez struck out two.

Center fielder James Triantos tripled to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and immediately scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Triantos went 1 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored three runs.

Right fielder Christian Franklin went 3 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base. He scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on a steal of third and an error on the throw.

First baseman Haydn McGeary singled home the tying run in the seventh. He went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.

Left fielder Yohendrick Pinango was 2 for 4 and scored once.

Birmingham won tonight, so the first-half North Division title will come down to the final day. The Smokies have to win and the Barons have to lose to Montgomery.

This is a good play on defense by the Smokies.

Starter Sam Armstrong took the loss after giving up five runs on five hits over 4.1 innings. Two of those five hits were home runs. Armstrong walked three, hit one and struck out three.

Both South Bend runs came on a two-run home run by Jordan Nwogu in the second inning. It was Nwogu’s fourth home run and third for South Bend. Nwogu was 1 for 3.

Shortstop Jefferson Rojas left this game after getting hit in the head with a pitch. He did leave the field under his own power. Rojas went 0 for 3.
