The Cubs have claimed right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter off of waivers and assigned him to Triple-A Iowa. Wingenter had been in the Red Sox organization.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs defiled the St. Paul Saints (Twins), 5-1. The win snapped Iowa’s nine-game losing streak.
Caleb Kilian started tonight and you could not have asked for it to go any better. Killian pitched four innings without allowing a run or a hit. Kilian struck out five and walked one.
Connor Noland threw the next four innings and picked up the win after surrendering just one run on four hits. Noland struck out five and walked just one.
Second baseman Chase Strumpf hit a grand slam in the top of the fist inning. It was Strumpf’s eighth home run this season. Strumpf was 1 for 4.
The I-Cubs fifth and final run came later in the first inning when left fielder Darius Hill tripled home first baseman Jake Hager. Hill was a perfect 2 for 2 with a walk. Hager went 2 for 4.
Catcher Moises Ballesteros was 2 for 4 and scored once.
Outfiedler Gilberto Celestino was hit in the face with a pitch in the first inning. Celestino left the game after that.

Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies lost to the Mississippi Braves, 7-6.
Sam Armstrong started and allowed six runs over 3+ innings. Five of those runs came in the fourth inning, which Amstrong started and failed to retire a batter. However, only two of the six runs were earned, thanks to two Smokies errors in that five-run fourth. Armstrong struck out four and walked no one.
Dalton Moats came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth with the score tied at 6-6. After retiring the first batter on a flyout, Moats walked a batter, who promptly went to second on a stolen base and third on a wild pitch. The third batter of the inning then singled home the winning run.
Second baseman Luis Verdugo went 2 for 4 and scored once.
Catcher William Simoneit was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI single. He also scored once.
Third baseman Jonathon Long went 1 for 2 with two walks. He scored one run and drove home two.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs were poisoned by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 4-2.
Will Sanders started and took the loss after surrendering four runs on eight hits over 4.2 innings. Sanders struck out four and walked one.
South Bend managed just four hits tonight. Center fielder Brett Bateman was 1 for 3 with a double and a walk. Bateman scored one run.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were fowl against the Delmarva Shorebirds (Orioles), 3-2. The loss snapped the Birds’ eight-game winning streak.
Starter Tyler Schlaffer pitched five scoreless innings, giving up just two hits. Schlaffer walked two and struck out three.
Vince Reilly had to come into the game in the bottom of the either in relief of Luis Rujano. Reilly got out of that jam, but he failed to retire a batter in the ninth, gave up two runs and got the loss. Reilly’s official line was two runs on one hit and two walks over a third of an inning. One of the two walks was intentional. Reilly did not have a strikeout.
Catcher Miguel Pabon was 2 for 4 with an RBI single in the fourth.
