Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: August 31

Wins for South Bend and a doubleheader sweep for Myrtle Beach.

Right-hander Daniel Missaki and infielder Hayden Cantrelle were promoted from Double-A Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa.

Right-hander Lisandro Almonte joins the Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans from Mesa.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs were blue after losing to the Memphis Redbirds (Cardinals), 10-8.

Cam Sanders got the start and he got hammered for four runs in the first inning. His final line was four runs on one hit and three walks over one inning. Sanders struck out one.

Trey Wingenter allowed a three-run home run in the eighth inning and got the loss. Wingenter threw one inning and allowed the three runs on two hits. He walked one andm struck out three.

Catcher Moises Ballesteros hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his ninth for Iowa and 18th overall. Ballesteros had seven total bases, going 3 for 5 with a double and the home run.

In the second inning, center fielder Trayce Thompson connected for his 23rd home run on the year with the bases empty. Thompson was 3 for 4 with a walk and two runs scored.

Left fielder Darius Hill doubled twice in a 2 for 4 game. Hill had three RBI and scored once.

Second baseman James Triantos was 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. Triantos had one run batted in.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were knocked out of orbit by the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 2-1. The loss snapped Tennessee’s ten-game winning streak.

Sam Armstrong started and got the tough-luck loss after he gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits over six innings. Armstrong struck out three and walked one.

Third baseman Luis Verdugo went 1 for 3 with a walk and an RBI.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs plucked the Great Lakes Loons (Dodgers), 7-4.

Jaxon Wiggins started and got the win after five innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Wiggins struck out eight and walked one.

Third baseman Cam Smith was 2 for 3 with a walk and a hit by pitch. But no home runs. He’s slumping. Anyway, Smith had two RBI and scored once. He’s hitting .474 (with a .583 OBP) in his first five games in South Bend.

Left fielder Pedro Ramirez went 2 for 3 with a walk. Ramirez drove home one run and scored one himself.

DH Edgar Alvarez was 2 for 4 with a walk, one RBI and one run scored.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans swept a doubleheader from the Down East Wood Ducks (Astros), 3-2 and 2-1. Although both games were played in Myrtle Beach, the Pelicans were the road team in game two.

J.P. Wheat started game one and allowed one run on one hit over 2.1 innings. Wheat walked three and struck out three. He also hit one batter.

Connor Schultz pitched the other 4.2 innings and picked up the win after allowing one unearned run on three hits. Schultz struck out three and walked no one.

Third baseman Reggie Preciado doubled home run run in the fourth inning. He was 1 for 1 with a walk.

Left fielder Leonel Espinoza was 0 for 2 with a walk and he scored on a wild pitch. He also did this on defense.

In game two, Alfredo Romero pitched the first four innings and allowed just one run on four hits. He struck out three and walked one.

Lisandro Almonte pitched three scoreless innings of relief in his Myrtle Beach debut and got the win. Almonte surrendered just one hit and one walk while striking out three.

The Birds had just three hits in game two, but one of them was a two-run home run by left fielder Carter Trice. It was his eighth home run. Trice was 1 for 2 with a walk.
