So the crappy news is that Iowa outfielder Brennen Davis has a broken leg. It’s quite sad how many injuries the former Cubs’ top prospect has suffered throughout his career.
So Davis goes on the injured list and infielder Reivaj Garcia joins Iowa from the Development List.
Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs blinded the Louisville Bats (Reds), 5-3.
Starter Caleb Kilian turned in the textbook “quality start,” going six innings and giving up three runs on five hits. Kilian walked two and struck out six.
Michael Arias pitched the next two innings and got the win after not giving up a run or a hit. Arias did walk two while striking out two.
Daniel Palencia walked a tightrope in the ninth, but locked down the save in the end. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, former Cub Tucker Barnhart reached on an error by third baseman Hayden Cantrelle. Next, Palencia walked the next two batters to load the bases. But Palencia got a grounder to Cantrelle who raced to third base to end the game. Palencia struck out one.
Catcher William Simoneit hit a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to break up a 3-3 tie. Simoneit was 2 for 3 with a walk.
Second baseman Matt Shaw was 2 for 4 with a double and one run scored.
Center fielder Trayce Thompson went 2 for 3 with a walk. He singled home a run in the first inning and scored on Simoneit’s double.
Left fielder Darius Hill went 2 for 4.
Here’s Simoneit’s double.

Tennessee Smokies
The Tennessee Smokies were crushed under the heel of the Birmingham Barons (White Sox), 14-2. The loss snapped the Smokies seven-game winning streak.
Starter Jimmy Endersby got shellacked for eight runs on eleven hits over just 3.1 innings. Endersby struck out four, walked one and hit one batter.
For the second straight game, third baseman Cam Smith tripled. Smith tripled in DH Jonathon Long in the fourth inning and then scored a “Little League home run” when there was a throwing error on the play.
Smith was 2 for 4. Long was 1 for 2 with two walks.
Center fielder Brett Bateman was 1 for 2 with two walks.
Here’s Smith’s triple.
