A hitless night for Addison Russell -- combined with a big missed opportunity in the seventh inning -- landed him on the top spot of the Goats in the Cubs' 6-0 loss on Tuesday night.

Yet another reason to love Grandpa Rossy.

Writer's Note: The daily selections of the three Heroes and three Goats are based solely on the top three and bottom three WPA scores for the game. The selections are not based on my subjective opinion.

The Gonzalez Mishap of World Series Game 1: With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the first, Jose Ramirez hits a squibber toward third base for an infield single, scoring Francisco Lindor and giving the Indians the early 1-0 lead. WPA impact: -.098.

THE THREE HEROES:

Superhero - Ben Zobrist (.111). The king of table-setting in Game 1, racking up three of the Cubs' six hits with a double (.062 WPA) and two singles.

Hero - Javier Baez (.037). It was looking like a one-way ticket to the Goat podium for Baez before his single in the seventh (.107 WPA) to load the bases with nobody out.

Sidekick - Pedro Strop (.017). Landed the final spot on the Heroes with the two outs that he recorded to end the sixth and start the seventh, which ended up being just enough to edge out...

Honorable Mention - Kyle Schwarber (.011). ...who had a nice first day back at the office, booming a double off of the wall in right field in the fourth and drawing a walk off of Andrew Miller in the seventh. His two strikeouts ended up killing his podium chances, though (-.085 WPA), primarily because both of them came with runners in scoring position.

THE THREE GOATS:

Billy Goat - Addison Russell (-.128). He wasn't the only Cub to go 0-for-4 in Game 1, but that strikeout in the seventh (-.087 WPA) definitely proved to be the most damaging part of his evening.

Goat - Jon Lester (-.124). It was all about the first inning for Lester (-.160 WPA); the first two outs came easily enough, but then a two-out single from Lindor was followed by two walks, the 35-foot single from Ramirez, and a ball that Brandon Guyer took off of his back knee to put the Cubs in an early 2-0 hole.

Kid - Dexter Fowler (-.096). One of the other two 0-for-4 outings in Game 1 -- along with Anthony Rizzo -- but his first two plate appearances carried more weight, particularly his strikeout in the third (-.031 WPA) with David Ross on first.

This was not the way we hoped the World Series would begin.

The turning point, as it turned out, of Game 1 of the Cubs’ first World Series in 71 years, came in the first inning. Corey Kluber had retired the Cubs in order in the top of the inning. That wasn’t unexpected — Kluber is, after all, really, really good.

Jon Lester matched him — for two batters. Then Francisco Lindor singled. You knew what was coming, and Lester and David Ross couldn’t stop him as he stole second.

Still -- one runner on, two out, Lester should be able to retire his old teammate Mike Napoli, right? Uh... no. Napoli walked. Then Lester walked Carlos Santana.

That should have set off alarm bells. Lester doesn’t walk two in a game very often, much less back-to-back in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Jose Ramirez hit a little dribbler down the third-base line.

Now, you could argue that Lester could potentially have made a play on that ball, but I doubt it. Even a good-fielding pitcher likely couldn’t, and neither could any other Cubs fielder. Ramirez couldn’t have rolled it out there with his hand better than that. The perfectly-placed hit made it 1-0.

And then former Cubs minor leaguer Brandon Guyer did what Brandon Guyer does best, get hit by a pitch. This is something he’s been pretty good at for a while, even back to his days in the Cubs system (13 HBP in 88 games at Peoria in the Midwest League in 2008). He led the American League in HBP in 2015 and the major leagues in that category in 2016 — without having more than 338 plate appearances in either year.

This was very uncharacteristic Lester, but in a game like this, against a pitcher as good as Kluber, there’s no margin for error. It was 2-0 after one inning and essentially, the game was over, though we did not know it at the time. The Indians went on to win 6-0 and take a 1-0 lead in the World Series. Here, want to feel better about that? Some historical comparisons:

And, the last time the Cubs lost 6-0 (Game 3 of the NLCS), they came back to win three straight (and that series) by scores of 10-2, 8-4 and 5-0.

There were some good things that happened for the Cubs in this game despite the shutout, so let’s focus on those.

First was the presence of Kyle Schwarber, something unexpected even as recently as a few days ago. And in his first at-bat, he struck out. But even that was a pretty good at-bat against one of baseball’s best pitchers, as he ran the count full before striking out on a nasty sinker from Kluber.

His second at-bat, in the fourth inning, was much, much better. His double off the right-field wall [VIDEO] missed being a home run by only a couple of feet. I don’t think anyone knew exactly what to expect from Warbird in this game, after not facing top big-league pitching all year. Yet he saw Kluber just once and slammed a double off him. Beyond impressive, and this will be a fun fact for all time:

Unfortunately, Javier Baez flied out to end that threat.

In the bottom of that inning, Indians catcher Roberto Perez homered off Lester to make it 3-0.

This is Indians catcher Roberto Perez, who hit .183/.285/.294 with three home runs in 153 at-bats during the regular season. I mean... that’s Koyie Hill territory (Hill’s numbers in 2012 for the Cubs were very, very similar to Perez’s 2016 regular-season stats). Perez did homer in the division series vs. the Red Sox, but before that hit he had been 4-for-24 (.167) in the postseason.

We should have known right there it wasn’t going to be the Cubs’ night, particularly because everyone knew it would soon be Andrew Miller’s turn to pitch.

Kluber completed six innings, allowing four hits and striking out nine, and then it was Miller time.

The Cubs really should have scored off Miller, who had never allowed a postseason run entering this game. They loaded the bases with nobody out. Ben Zobrist — who had a very good night with three hits — singled. Schwarber walked and Baez singled.

I don’t know. Maybe you try a squeeze here, just to get something, anything, going? Willson Contreras batted for Chris Coghlan and hit a fly to center, but too shallow to score a run, and Schwarber nearly got himself caught off second base. Halfway to third when the ball was caught by Rajai Davis, Schwarber was able to get back to second only because Davis, focused on preventing a run, threw home. Perez thought briefly about throwing to second to get Schwarber but held the ball — a smart play, because if he does, Zobrist probably scores.

Miller then struck out Addison Russell and Ross to end the Cubs’ only real threat. Here are all the plays from that inning:

Give the Cubs credit. Most teams — including the Red Sox and Blue Jays in the A.L. playoffs -- can’t hit Miller at all. The Cubs got two more runners on off Miller in the eighth, on a walk drawn by Kris Bryant and Zobrist’s third hit of the night. That brought up Schwarber.

If Hollywood dramatists wrote scripts for the World Series, Schwarber, with his team down 3-0, would have hit a home run. It would have crashed off one of the toothbrush-shaped light towers at Progressive Field and smashed out some lights, a la The Natural.

Sadly, this script was not written that way. Schwarber struck out.

I kept thinking the Cubs might have had a chance against Indians closer Cody Allen in the ninth, but after two runners reached in the bottom of the eighth off Justin Grimm, Joe called on Hector Rondon.

Hector’s slider wasn’t working, either that or Roberto Perez just knew what was coming, because he hit his second homer of the night off Hector to make it 6-0. I’m quite concerned about Rondon, as he just doesn’t look like the same guy since his return from the injury that put him on the shelf for several weeks late in the regular season. He had a poor September (9.82 ERA, 2.045 WHIP in 7⅓ innings with two home runs allowed) and he’s now allowed three runs in four postseason innings.

The Cubs did get a hit in the ninth, a double by Contreras, but Allen wound up striking out the side to end it. The Cubs K’d 15 times in all. We’ve seen this script before, but the Cubs usually wind up coming back after a game where they strike out this much to score bunches of runs.

One more thought about all the K’s: Kluber’s good, but he got some help from Larry Vanover’s extremely wide strike zone — which appeared to be wide only for Kluber, not Lester. Also, Vanover’s strike call is usually delayed, a lot:

it is the year 2145. humans have destroyed earth. the last survivors are leaving for mars. larry vanover has just finished his strike 3 call
— travis sarandos (@travis_mke) October 26, 2016

This led, at one point, to Bryant heading to first base thinking he had walked, only to be called out on strikes. Umpires need to make swift, decisive calls in cases like this, I think, especially on that pitch, which was borderline:

Call hurts #Cubs
Strike 3 should be ball 4
Top 1 Kluber vs Bryant
34% call same
0.9in from edge pic.twitter.com/Oe3qIXhqvh
— Cubs Strike Zone (@CubsUmp) October 26, 2016

Probably a strike, or close enough to make it so. But with the delayed call, Bryant thought it was ball four. It wasn’t the worst-called game I’ve ever seen ... but there have certainly been better-called ball-and-strike games.

The short version of all this is: The Cubs were going to have a tough time winning this game even if Lester had been sharp. Kluber just carved through Cubs hitters. On the other hand, they made Miller work — a lot. The 46 pitches he threw is the most he’s had in any game since he became a fulltime reliever in 2012, and the Cubs were the first team all year to have multiple hits and multiple walks off him in a single appearance. You’d think that would make Miller unavailable in Game 2, but that isn’t generally the way the World Series works. With only a handful of games left in the season, you can bet Terry Francona will call on Miller if he thinks he needs him. Going in back-to-back games with that many pitches thrown, though, might mean Cubs hitters could hit him -- and now they’ve seen him for two innings and 10 batters faced, valuable experience, I’d say, for a team that had never seen him before.

When a team goes into a ballpark in any playoff series without the home-field advantage, the conventional wisdom is that if you can come out of there with a split, you’ve done pretty much all you can do. And so if the Cubs can accomplish that with a victory in Game 2, I’d say I agree with that wisdom -- especially since Francona has strongly hinted he might come back with Kluber on three days’ rest for Game 4. Kluber’s never started on three days’ rest — ever.

So in the end, it’s disappointing to lose this game. But it’s a best-of-seven series and far from over.

I’ve got a few thoughts on the TV broadcast, since Game 1 was the first time this postseason I’ve watched the Cubs on TV instead of being at the game.

Honestly, I don’t get the Joe Buck hate. He’s certainly not my favorite broadcaster, but he calls a competent game and I don’t think he favored either team. The Fox crew stayed away from gratuitous celebrity shots in the stands and covered the game well from a visual standpoint, I thought. John Smoltz is slowly becoming one of the game’s best analysts. And did you notice this? Check out the Fox scorebox in the first inning:

The Cubs are listed as “CHC,” the standard abbreviation used on national broadcasts when they’re involved. But by the second inning, Fox had changed it:

I like that better, I think. It stayed that way for the rest of the game, and I assume it’ll look like that for the rest of the series.

Also, I would highly recommend skipping Fox’s pregame show and watching the pregame show on MLB Network. They focus more on baseball than on the nonsense coming out of Pete Rose’s mouth, and I rather like Mark DeRosa’s commentary.

A reminder that MLB has moved up the start time of Game 2 an hour. It will now begin at 6:08 p.m. CT, due to a forecast of rain later in the evening. That might actually give Fox better ratings on the East Coast — Game 1 ended at 11:45 Eastern time. On the other hand, I know it makes it somewhat more difficult for those of you in the Pacific time zone to catch the whole game, since it will begin shortly after 4 p.m. out there.

Jake Arrieta will take the mound for the Cubs when that earlier game begins, and Trevor Bauer goes for the Indians. Win this one and the Cubs will have accomplished what they likely set out to do — take back the home-field advantage they should have had anyway, with the majors’ best record.

Keep the faith. This series is far from over.

The Indians took game 1. Good thing it’s a seven-game series.

The saying goes that sometimes you just have to tip your hat and go on to the next game. This was one of those games.

Behind a brilliant pitching performance, the Cleveland Indians took a one game to none lead over the Chicago Cubs with a 6-0 victory in game 1 of the 2016 World Series.

Corey Kluber is a very good pitcher. He’s not normally as good as he was tonight, but he is capable of turning in a performance like tonight’s and there wasn’t much the Cubs could do. Kluber struck out eight batters in the first three innings and five of them were looking. Was he getting calls? Sure. But when you’re around the plate like Kluber was with a cutter that nasty, you’re going to get borderline calls. The Cubs weren’t going to hit those pitches anyway, which is probably why they took so many of them. Kluber finished the night with 6+ scoreless innings. He gave up just four hits, walked no one and struck out nine.

The Indians got two runs in the first inning off of Lester after two were out. Francisco Lindor singled up the middle and promptly stole second base, as we all knew he was going to do. Still, that’s wouldn’t have been a big problem had Lester not walked the next two batters. Lester then got Jose Ramirez to hit a weak ground ball. Unfortunately, it was too weak and it died in the infield for an RBI single. Next, Lester threw a hard cutter to former Cubs minor leaguer Brandon Guyer on an 0-2 count. Unfortunately, it broke too much and hit Guyer in the back foot to force in another run. Lonnie Chisenhall then fouled out to end the inning on a pretty nice catch by catcher David Ross.

The Indians tacked on another run off of Lester on a solo home run by catcher Roberto Perez with one out in the fourth.

The Cubs got a rally going in the seventh inning when Ben Zobrist led off the inning with a single off of Kluber. Indians manager Tito Francona then went to his not-so-secret weapon in the bullpen, Andrew Miller. Kyle Schwarber, who had just missed a home run off of Kluber earlier in the game, drew a walk. It was the second time Miller had walked a left-handed hitter all season. Javier Baez then loaded the bases with no outs when he reached out for an 0-2 slider and stroked it into left field for a single.

But that’s when Andrew Miller turned back into the Miller we’ve seen all season. He got pinch-hitter Willson Contreras to hit into a shallow fly out to center field. Then he struck out Addison Russell and David Ross to end the Cubs only real threat of the game.

The Cubs got another rally going off of Miller in the eighth inning. Bryant walked with one out and after Rizzo flew out to center, Zobrist hit his third single of the game to put runners on the corners with two outs. But once again, Miller struck out Schwarber to end the threat.

Hector Rondon came on to pitch the bottom of the eighth inning and Rondon has not looked right for most of the playoffs. Tonight he gave up a three-run home run on a hanging slider that Roberto Perez deposited over the wall in left-center field.

Perez hit three home runs in the regular season for the Indians. He hit two tonight. It was that kind of night.

If there’s a silver lining to this game, it’s that the Cubs made Miller throw 46 pitches, and made him look like just a very good pitcher and not the Asgardian warrior he was in the ALCS. That’s the most pitches Miller has thrown in any appearance in five years. He probably won’t be available for game 2 and if he is, his effectiveness could be limited.

The other piece of good news here is that this game was close to a must-win game for Cleveland. The Indians have only one dependable (healthy) starter in Kluber. If they had lost this one, then they’d really be in trouble. As it is, the Indians hold serve and the Cubs will be looking to even things up tomorrow.

There is rain in the forecast for tomorrow, so the game has been moved up to a 6:08 Central start time. Right-hander Jake Arrieta will take the mound for the Cubs and he’ll be opposed by noted drone enthusiast Trevor Bauer. It will be the first time Bauer takes the mound since the bloody mess of game 3 of the ALCS. Even if healthy, however, Bauer is not intimidating. I won’t say game 2 is a must-win game for the Cubs, but it’s pretty darn important.

No one said this would be easy.

It's really happening. The Cubs are in the World Series!

Before I begin here, I wanted to say these 10 words, so important to me (and I presume they're exactly how you're feeling as well):

I have been waiting...

my entire life...

for this day.

I'd have loved to be in Cleveland for the first Cubs World Series game in my lifetime. But tickets were simply unobtainable, and I'm not so sure I could have made it anyway, after two trips back & forth to California for the first two rounds over the last couple of weeks.

So I will watch the TV broadcast along with all of you, as well as tomorrow's Game 2, and await being at the first Wrigley Field World Series game in my lifetime on Friday. Speaking of the TV broadcast, tonight is another first -- the first time a Cubs World Series game has ever been televised.

That's former Cubs farmhand Brandon Guyer starting in left field for the Tribe. He was traded to the Rays in the Matt Garza deal, and wound up dealt to Cleveland at this year's deadline for two minor leaguers.

Corey Kluber

It has been noted that these pitchers matched up against each other at Wrigley Field little more than a year ago, August 24, 2015. Both pitched wonderfully. Lester came within one out of a complete-game shutout. Kluber threw 7⅔ innings, allowed four hits and one run, and struck out 11.

I would expect nothing less tonight, especially with the temperature at game time expected to be around 50 degrees -- definitely weather favoring pitchers.

More recently, Lester has been pretty awesome. Excluding a stinker of an outing in Cincinnati in his last regular-season start, Lester has an 0.76 ERA in his other 10 starts dating back to August 22. He's been magnificent in the postseason: two earned runs in 21 innings (0.86 ERA, 0.762 WHIP) and his World Series record is impeccable: 0.43 ERA in three career starts in the WS (21 innings total).

In other words, this game is exactly why Jon Lester is a Cub, why Theo & Co. wanted him so much, why he wanted to come here.

Corey Kluber has made three starts this postseason. The first, against the Red Sox, was outstanding. The second, vs. the Blue Jays, was pretty good, but the Jays touched him up in Game 4 of the ALCS for two runs in five innings, the only game the Jays won in that series. Is Kluber running out of gas this year? At 233⅓ total innings in 2016, he's just short of the most innings he's thrown any year in his career (235 in 2014).

The keys to this game, as you no doubt know: try to score early and avoid having to face Andrew Miller and the rest of the Indians bullpen, and try to keep the Indians speedsters (Rajai Davis in particular) off base.

These two managers know each other very well, both from many years' worth of matchups in the A.L. East, and from seven games of the 2008 ALCS -- won by Joe Maddon's Rays.

Today's game is on Fox. Announcers: Joe Buck, John Smoltz and Ken Rosenthal.

The 2016 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used at the end of 2015. Here's how it works.

You'll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream™ containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game's StoryStream™ as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
