Cubs win again 5-4 to improve to 24-21.

After the dominating performance of Jon Lester on Tuesday night, the Cubs were looking for back-to-back wins with Kyle Hendricks on the mound. After each team was scoreless in the first, Kyle allowed a run in the top of the second and once again the Cubs would be starting this one out playing uphill.

Anthony Rizzo answered in the bottom of the second with a solo home run. When Kyle Hendricks allowed a solo home run to start the third, I wondered if we would be looking at a slug fest, which was a little disappointing given how good Kyle had looked lately. But then it was like 2016 all over again. Kyle Hendricks reverted to all he does is get guys out form. He retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced in finishing seven innings. And he did so in an efficient 98 pitches. Joe seems to be very willing to let Hendricks work 95-100 pitches, so it really is just a matter of how efficient Kyle can be. Last night, he was very efficient.

This one got tense late as the Cubs had to escape jams in the eighth and the ninth (after Wade Davis had allowed a two-run home run to cut the lead to one). When the game is tight late, it can significantly alter the podium for Heroes and Goats. Let’s take a look at last night’s WPA scores.

As a reminder, the Heroes and Goats themselves are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.

THE THREE HEROES:

Superhero - Anthony Rizzo (.303). Anthony hit two home runs, one to tie the game at 1-1 and another to tie it at 2-2. That’s a great recipe for reaching the superhero podium.

Hero - Kyle Hendricks (.212). As we talked about yesterday in the game recap, Kyle hasn’t been a recipient of a lot of run support. Last night, he got five runs and he pitched well enough to put the team in position to win.

Sidekick - Miguel Montero (.144). Inserted into the lineup against a left handed pitcher on a rare occasion (Matt Moore has had some odd splits this year), Miggy produced a single in the fifth and doubled and scored in the seventh.

THE THREE GOATS:

Billy Goat - Albert Almora (-.106). Albert batted second in this one, but didn’t contribute at the plate as he was hitless in four tries.

Goat - Ian Happ (-.085). Ian was also hitless while batting fifth. He did draw a walk but didn’t figure in any of the scoring. This is one of the things the Cubs look for. It’s been a tough couple of days at the plate for Happ. How does he respond and adjust?

Kid - Kris Bryant (-.075). Kris was also hitless while batting third. He also drew a walk in the game, but didn’t figure in the scoring.

If you glanced down here and saw your second, third and fifth hitters all on the goats podiums you’d have to be a little nervous. But, with the two homers from Rizzo and the strong outing from Hendricks as well as some narrow escapes from the bullpen and the Cubs were able to hold on and win.

Before we go, we’ll look at our year to date standings for Heroes and Goats. As a reminder, we award three points for Superhero, two for Hero, and one for Sidekick. And we deduct -3 points for Billy Goat, -2 for Goat and -1 for Kid. Here then are the standings.

The Cubs first baseman slugged two homers and the team held on to win.

Anthony Rizzo is a noted streak hitter, always has been and likely always will be.

He’s now hitting 10-for-27 (.370/.500/.926) over his last eight games with five home runs (and only two strikeouts!). Streak, begun! Hopefully this will continue when the Cubs finally get out of this miserable Chicago cold weather and to warm southern California for the next week.

Two of those home runs came against the Giants Wednesday night, helping lead the Cubs to a 5-4 victory.

The Cubs needed both of Rizzo’s blasts (it was his 14th career multi-homer game) as well as what looked like insurance runs in the seventh and eight, because a couple of Wade Davis streaks ended in this one.

Before we get to Davis’ rough ninth inning, let’s have a look at Rizzo’s homers. The first one came in the second inning with the Cubs down 1-0 [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

After Denard Span homered to give the Giants the lead again in the top of the third, Rizzo got that run back in the fourth with his second blast [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

The second one was crushed!

The Cubs took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on two singles and a sacrifice fly by Javier Baez. Meanwhile, Hendricks had settled down. After Span’s homer he retired 10 straight Giants before Brandon Belt singled with one out in the sixth, a bunt that Hendricks probably should have just put in his pocket. Instead, a throwing error put Span on second. Fortunately, Hendricks stranded him and retired the rest of the Giants he faced, finishing with a solid seven-inning, five-hit, no-walk, two-run evening.

It was in the bottom of the sixth, with two Cubs on base and Jason Heyward at bat, that the contest erupted into a bit of controversy. You decide [VIDEO].

Watching that again a couple of times, Giants announcer Duane Kuiper is correct — he noted it right away. Heyward took a step inside the baseline just before he got to first base. It clearly wasn’t intentional, but that doesn’t matter. The rule is what it is, and Heyward was out and the runners had to return. Too bad, because a run had scored when the ball got away from Belt and Rizzo had made it all the way to third base.

The Cubs scored in the seventh to make it 4-2, and in the next inning plate umpire Jeff Nelson appeared to completely forget exactly what makes up a strike zone.

Pinch-hitter Michael Morse led off with a single and was forced at second. Joe Panik popped up to Kris Bryant in foul territory and with two out and a runner at first, it looked like the Cubs were out of the inning.

But Koji Uehara walked Belt. Or more accurately, a walk is what Nelson called — it looked to me as if at least one, maybe two pitches that were called balls in that sequence were strikes.

Then Joe Maddon brought in Carl Edwards Jr. to face Buster Posey, and the same thing happened. Nelson’s calls were all over the place and Posey wound up walking on four pitches, loading the bases. Fortunately, CJ got Brandon Crawford to hit a comebacker to end the threat.

The Cubs added their fifth run of the night on a sacrifice fly by Jon Jay after Heyward had smacked a triple to right field leading off the inning. That Heyward hit was nice to see; he’s started hitting the ball with authority again after coming off the disabled list earlier this week.

Then it was time for Davis, whose ERA still stood at 0.00 entering the game; he had allowed just one unearned run all year, and had not allowed a home run since September 2015.

I suppose rust might be as good an explanation as any. Davis hadn’t been in a game in a week, and Eduardo Nunez hit the first pitch from Davis up the middle for a single. Davis struck out Christian Arroyo, which brought up Mac Williamson, a little-used spare-part outfielder who was hitting .160 (4-for-25) at the time he stepped into the box, including 0-for-3 against Hendricks.

Williamson worked a 2-2 count, including at one point fouling off six straight pitches, and then deposited Davis’ 12th pitch of the at-bat into the right-field seats to make it 5-4.

Give Williamson a lot of credit:

Incredible at bat. Hats off. Cutter was executed. Williamson will likely never have that good of an at bat ever again in his life. https://t.co/7J6HeyUeDE
— John Baker (@manbearwolf) May 25, 2017

If you believe this, Davis should have had Williamson struck out quite a bit earlier in that sequence:

Thanks for nothing, Jeff Nelson.

Davis then walked Morse, putting the tying run on base, but got Span to pop up and struck out Panik to end it, giving the Cubs their second straight win over the Giants and moving them to a 6-2 record on the homestand.

The weather was again miserable, cold with an 18 mile per hour wind blowing straight in from left field. Just to remind us that it has rained nearly every day this month, a little rainshower popped up over Wrigley Field right when the first pitch was thrown. It rained for about five minutes, then stopped.

Fortunately, Thursday’s forecast has no rain at all (and, crossing our fingers, perhaps even a little sunshine). And the Cubs will go for a series win and a very successful 7-2 homestand at 1:20 p.m. CT. Eddie Butler will face our old friend Jeff Samardzija.

Kyle Hendricks, last five starts: 1.82 ERA in 29⅔ innings, 1.146 WHIP. That sounds more like the Kyle of last year than he was over his first three outings. No current Giants hitter has more than nine career at-bats against him. He faced the Giants in Game 2 of last year's division series, in which he got pulled early (3⅔ innings) after allowing a pair of runs -- and driving in two with a single. Hendricks is much better at Wrigley Field (2.37 lifetime ERA, 40 starts) than on the road (3.52 lifetime ERA, 43 starts).

The last time we saw Matt Moore, he was carving up Cubs hitters in Game 4 of the 2016 division series. You all know the end result of that one. Moore has had several good starts and a few bad ones, making his overall numbers look poor. He has a 2.89 ERA and 1.446 WHIP in his last three starts, which is an improvement. That division series game last year is the only time Moore has ever faced the Cubs or anyone on the current roster. Moore allowed only two hits to the Cubs that night: a single by Anthony Rizzo and a homer by David Ross.

Hopefully, they'll do better against him tonight.

The 2017 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used during 2016. Here's how it works.

You'll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game's StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.
