Buster Posey’s first inning home run puts Cubs in a hole that they never recovered from.

I don’t follow the Cubs as closely when they are on the West Coast. This year that has been a good thing. The Cubs have only won one game out of eight played in California this year. From reading Joe Maddon’s post game comments, I suppose I should be making analogies to Lucy moving the ball again or whatever. I saw two whole batters last night as I considered watching the game before bed. I saw the ground ball that Baez was charged with an error on. Probably a fair call, but that certainly wasn’t a gimme. Certainly the whole inning changes if he makes that play. You certainly approach Buster Posey different with a man on third and two outs than with runners on first and third and only one out. Then Buster Posey hit one that I swore he got under off of the bat and that it would be a lazy fly ball that would surely give the Giants a run on a sacrifice fly. But then the ball just kept on carrying. Jon Jay made a game effort to rob him of a three-run homer, but he was not quite in line with it and even if he was, it was probably a foot or two above what he could have reached.

I don’t know. Javy Baez was an inch or two away from making his play. Jon Jay was a foot or so from making his? So a few feet in a different direction and the whole game plays entirely different. So I turned the game off and watched some regular TV with the wife before bed. So like many of you I suspect, I woke up this morning and checked my phone to see if the Cubs had come from behind. They did not. The Brewers lost, so no harm in the standings. I just can’t get bent out of shape about it.

I do know this. With Madison Bumgarner on the mound for the Giants today and three games in Arizona to follow, it is going to be a tall task to get to three wins and even out this 12-game stretch that figured to be a challenging one.

I suspect the Cubs will win a lot of games between August 14 and the end of the season. I suspect they will win the division by enough games that they’ll be able to line up their pitching rotation for a first round matchup properly. I suspect there will still be a ton of questions, largest of which is that the Cubs really struggled with decent teams this year. And yet, I suspect that these aren’t the Cubs of 10, 20 or 30 years ago. I don’t believe they will go quietly into the offseason. Even if the Nationals prevail in a five-game division series, I expect them to be tested by these Cubs.

On that note, we’ll get to the heart of this column and look at the Heroes and Goats as determined by WPA. As a reminder, the Heroes and Goats themselves are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.

THE THREE HEROES:

Superhero - Ian Happ (.069). Well, this is potentially a good sign. This is already his second multi-hit game in August and he’s also had a game with a hit and a walk. In six games, four starts he is .278/.333/.500. Getting production from at least one of the Cubs switch hitters would be a significant development.

Hero - Willson Contreras (.051). The Giants have done a nice job slowing down Contreras. But he did have a one out double in the sixth and scored on Ian Happ’s double. That was the closest the Cubs would get at 4-2.

Sidekick - Kris Bryant (.014). Kris singled twice and scored once. He isn’t higher on the list because he flew out to end the fifth with a runner on third.

THE THREE GOATS:

Billy Goat - Jose Quintana (-.202). Jose is in a little bit of a slump right now. He had been allowing too many fly balls and now a few of them have gone out in a cluster and it really makes the results look bad. On the other hand, Paul Goldschmidt and Buster Posey are really great at baseball and make a lot of people look bad.

Goat - Anthony Rizzo (-.081). It’s so easy for me to take Anthony Rizzo for granted. It seems like he’s really been struggling. Of course I’m unfairly biased by this column and he just hasn’t been popping up every day as a Superhero. And then I pull up his numbers and he’s in the midst of a four game hitting streak and he’s already had three multi hit games in the first eight days of August.

Kid - Albert Almora Jr. (-.075). I’m going to tip my cap to Ty Blach. Anthony Rizzo and Albert Almora have his lefties very well this year, but he did a good job against both of them last night. He’s beaten the Cubs now twice this year. This is his seventh consecutive start of at least six innings and fifth straight start of at least seven innings. Guys who average less than five strike outs per nine innings don’t usually have much success, but he now sports a 3.83 FIP for the Giants this year.

With that, let’s take a look at the year-to-date standings for Heroes and Goats. As a reminder, we award three points for Superhero, two for Hero, and one for Sidekick. And we deduct three points for Billy Goat, two for Goat and one for Kid. Here then are the standings.

The rise of Willson Contreras continues. He moves up while Anthony Rizzo slides down. Let’s see if Willson can stay there for more than a day this time. And let’s see if Rizzo can counter punch again. Ian Happ takes a big step towards getting back onto the positive side of things as Jose Quintana falls perilously close to falling into negative territory.

The Cubs will try again this afternoon. They hand the ball to Kyle Hendricks. Kyle completed seven innings the last time out. He also threw seven innings in a start against the Giants at Wrigley Field in May. Madison Bumgarner will start for the Giants. This game pits two pitchers who are working their way back from injuries that have interrupted their seasons. Maddison has thrown seven innings in consecutive starts. Amazingly, he has a 2.88 ERA but a 1-5 record. His last two starts have seen him throw 14 innings and only allow two runs and yet he has a loss and a no decision to show for it. Hopefully he’ll continue to be plagued by a lack of run support.

In yesterday’s poll, six different players received at least one vote and Javier Baez was the choice for Hero of Monday night’s game with 54% of the votes. Today we’ll vote on Goat of Tuesday night’s game.

There’s really no good news coming from this loss.

Every time the Cubs tried to mount a comeback in what wound up a 6-3 loss to the Giants, they’d give up runs to the home team and negate what they’d just accomplished.

So “frustrating” would be a good word to describe this.

I’m not going to harp on the first-inning run thing as that’s been done too many times. However, I will note that this is something that Jose Quintana also did as a member of the White Sox — allow multiple first-inning runs, then settle down and have a pretty good outing the rest of the way.

That’s what happened Tuesday night. And you can’t even necessarily totally blame him, either, because he did what he had to do in that first inning. Gorkys Hernandez hit a ground ball that Javier Baez couldn’t quite handle. It went for a hit. He advanced to second on another grounder to Javy, and then Baez couldn’t pick up yet another ground ball, this one hit by Hunter Pence.

Quintana could have been out of the inning. Instead, there were two runners on with one out, and then this happened:

Buster Posey launches a three-run home run to left, and after review, the call is confirmed to give the Giants a 3-0 lead in the 1st!!! #MLB pic.twitter.com/E43riXpNHc
— The Render (@TheRenderMLB_) August 9, 2017

Buster Posey’s home run landed just out of the reach of Jon Jay. It would have been a spectacular catch; a fan touched the ball so Joe Maddon asked for a crew chief review. But the review showed it was obviously in the seats, giving the Giants a 3-0 lead.

Quintana actually threw really well after that, despite giving up another run in the fourth. He threw 24 pitches in that first inning and just 65 for innings two through six. His line: six innings, six hits, four runs, three earned, overall wasn’t too bad.

But the Cubs simply could not score enough runs to come back. With runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, Jay grounded out, scoring one run, but that was it. One more run came across in the sixth on a pair of one-out doubles by Willson Contreras and Ian Happ to make it 4-2, but Albert Almora Jr. and Jason Heyward grounded out to end that inning.

Ty Blach, who stymied the Cubs at Wrigley in May, threw his game, one dependent on ground balls. He got 11 ground-ball outs out of the 21 he recorded, and that really was that.

Koji Uehara was brought in to the seventh inning. He issued a walk and allowed a single and then left with an injury [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

This article has a few details on the injury, though nothing too specific:

After a sloppy 6-3 loss, the Cubs were still evaluating the stiffness that Uehara has been feeling on the right side/lower part of his neck for several days now.

“No, not at all,” Uehara said through a translator when asked if he’s concerned.

Hopefully, that won’t keep Koji out too long, especially since the article above also says:

The Cubs already held back Hector Rondon (stiff back) against the Giants and hope the right-hander will be ready to go for Wednesday afternoon’s series finale.

Carl Edwards Jr. entered and retired all three batters he faced, though one run scored on a force play, charged to Uehara.

And so it was that by the time the Cubs scored a third run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Happ — again, they had multiple runners on with just one out — they had put themselves further in the hole with that seventh-inning run. They never got closer than a two-run deficit.

The Giants’ final run scored off Justin Wilson in the eighth inning. Posey singled, stole second and scored on a single by Brandon Crawford. Wilson ran long counts on almost every hitter he faced, throwing 29 pitches in all, and so likely is not available for the series finale. Wilson’s been pretty unimpressive since he came over from the Tigers in a deadline deal. In four appearances (four innings), he’s allowed six hits and three walks for an opponents’ BA of .316 and OBP of .409, not exactly what the Cubs hoped they were getting, especially since he’s under team control for 2018 and the Cubs will need him as a key part of next year’s bullpen.

First things first. Despite the loss the Cubs remain 1½ games ahead of the Brewers, who were crushed 11-4 by the Twins Tuesday night. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Cardinals won Tuesday, their fourth in a row, and St. Louis is now just 2½ games behind. And the Pirates won, their fifth win in six games, and now trail by only 3½ games.

A four-team race in the N.L. Central? Could happen.

The Cubs will try to take care of business and win the series Wednesday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. CT. Kyle Hendricks will face Madison Bumgarner. The game preview will post at 1 p.m. CT.

The Cubs go for two in a row over the Giants.

Happy birthday, Anthony Rizzo! The Cubs first baseman turns 28 today.

Rizzo’s 159 home runs as a Cub rank 14th in team history. Next up: Andre Dawson with 174.

As for the Cubs, they are on a roll on the road, having won 12 of their last 13 road games (the only loss was one in Milwaukee), and they’ve outscored their opponents 76-33 in those games.

Jose Quintana had a rough outing his last time out against the Diamondbacks, which ended a 10-start stretch in which he had posted a 2.59 ERA and 1.102 WHIP. Hopefully that was a one-off and he can get back on track tonight.

Jose has faced the Giants just once in his career, three years ago on August 13, 2014. He threw 6⅔ innings and allowed four hits and four runs. Hopefully tonight will be better.

(Is that hopeful enough?)

Ty Blach started and won the only game the Giants have taken from the Cubs this year, May 22 at Wrigley Field. He threw seven innings that day and gave up eight hits, but only three runs.

Later in June he had a six-start stretch where he posted a 6.95 ERA and 1.723 WHIP. But his last two starts have been pretty good. He hit a home run off somebody named Chris Smith in his last outing, last Thursday against the A’s. I do not expect that to be repeated.

Today's game is on CSN Chicago. It’s also on MLB Network (outside the Chicago and San Francisco markets).

The 2017 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used during 2016. Here's how it works.

You'll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game's StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.
