Cubs impressive in 8-0 win over Brewers.

For the first time this year, I felt like we got a glimpse of what this Cubs team could look like. Was it perfection? No. Was it dominant? Yep. Cubs pitchers combined on a shutout allowing only four hits and one walk while striking out 11. Cubs hitters put together 13 hits, four walks, a hit batter and eight runs. Yes, they struck out another nine times, but that is more or less modern baseball.

I have to be honest, when the Cubs didn’t score in the top of the first and then Ryan Braun drew a two out walk and then literally just took second base, I was wondering when the early season nightmare would end. Around Bleed Cubbie Blue there had been plenty of discussion about the oddity that Jon Lester never faced the Brewers in 2017. The brazen way the Brewers aggressively ran the bases against him was cited as a reason. I do remember Joe juggling his rotation a fair amount in 2017, usually getting Lester a start a day early before the Brewers series. Getting one of your best pitchers an extra start over the season is a good strategy as long as he is healthy and strong.

Anyway, Braun decided he’d just take third as well. But Jon Lester was having none of that. He tried out the new bounce throw idea for the first time in a regular game and Voila! It worked. Braun was out. The Cubs put three on the board in the top of the second and the Brewers attempted no more daring base running as the Cubs gradually built their lead. The Cubs got contributions from a number of players and coasted to the 8-0 victory.

With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.

THE THREE HEROES:

Superhero - Jon Lester (.220). Jon had a nice bounce back start after getting knocked around on opening day. He threw six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk. He struck out six. He also picked off a runner (as was correctly predicted in one of the comment threads yesterday).

Hero - Addison Russell (.122). Russell has been making some very solid contact through most of the start of this season. Last night, had two hits in five at bats. He singled with one out and eventually scored in the big third inning (.086). He also doubled in a run with two outs in the third (.048).

Sidekick - Javier Baez (.113). In a game that will provide a nice boost to his on base percentage, Javy managed to record only one at bat. That at bat was a two run single with one out in the second. He followed that with two intentional walks, an unintentional walk and a hit by pitch. Five times on in five plate appearances.

THE THREE GOATS:

Billy Goat/Goat (tie) - Anthony Rizzo and Ian Happ (-.047). Anthony was hitless in five at bats. There wasn’t a lot negative in this game, his biggest negative was the foul out in the first inning with two outs and a runner on first (-.023). Ian Happ did have one hit, but he batted six times. He also struck out four more times. His biggest negative was his strike out leading off the game (-.023). Ian also stole a base.

Kid - Kris Bryant (-.024). The horrors. Kris Bryant is knocked out of his early season lead in the Heroes and Goats standing on a day where he had two hits in five at bats. Kris lands here because he flew out in the first following a Ben Zobrist single (-.028). When your team grabs an early lead and just keeps building on it, your first at bat is everything.

WPA Play of the Day - Finally, one for the good guys. Willson Contreras lead off the second inning with a single. Albert Almora Jr. then grounded into a fielder’s choice. Addison Russell singled and when the Brewers tried to throw Almora out going to third, Russell took second. That made it second and third with one out and Javier Baez stepped to the plate. Javy drilled a single to center scoring both runs (.106). That is the WPA Play of the Day.

*Brewers highest positive WPA of the day — The Almora fielder’s choice was a (.035) positive event for the Brewers. So basically, there was nothing positive about the Brewers game.

Cumulative Leaders:

Superhero - Kris Bryant, Steve Cishek, Eddie Butler, Ben Zobrist and Tyler Chatwood 3

Bryant’s tough luck bunches everyone back up at the top.

Up Next: Game two of a four game set with the Brewers. Kyle Hendricks will be the starter for the Cubs. Kyle comes off a slightly more wild than usual start against the Marlins in which he issued three walks in six innings. But, he was effective in limiting the Marlins to just one run in six innings. Brandon Woodruff will start for the Brewers. The Cubs have never faced Woodruff. That hasn’t gone well for the Cubs so far in 2018 as they’ve won the three games against guys they’ve seen before and lost the three against those they haven’t. Hopefully they’ll carry momentum from yesterday, get a good start from Hendricks and pull one out today.

Jon Lester was outstanding and Javy was Javy.

From 2015-17 the Cubs played exceptionally well in Miller Park, going 19-10 there.

Thus it figured to be a good place for the Cubs to break out of the funk that had them shut out on consecutive days by teams (Reds, Marlins) that don’t figure to be that good by the end of the season.

That’s exactly what happened. The Cubs got solid pitching out of Jon Lester and the bullpen and the offense broke through in an 8-0 shutout win over the Brewers.

The Brewers obviously had a game plan that included running wild on Lester. When Ryan Braun walked with two out in the first inning, he just... took off for second base. A walking lead, then just ran, and not very fast, because there was no attempt to stop him. Then he did it again trying to take third. That’s when this happened:

That wasn’t exactly pretty, the throw from Lester to Kris Bryant, but it got the job done.

In the second inning, Willson Contreras led off with a single. One out later, Addison Russell also singled, and Braun threw to the wrong base, allowing Russell to take second. Javier Baez singled them both in, bringing up Lester. That’s when this happened:

Lester’s bouncer hit two gloves on its way to center field. Pitcher Brent Suter and second baseman Hernan Perez both touched it. Perez was given an error, though I thought Lester should have been credited with a single. When center fielder Lorenzo Cain bobbled the ball, Baez picked that up (you can see him glancing back in the video) and ran right through a stop sign from third base coach Brian Butterfield to score.

This is not recommended. But Javy was just being Javy. His baseball instincts are off the charts. Not only did he recognize in an instant that he could score, but he wound up putting together a perfect slide to get under the tag from catcher Jett Bandy.

The three runs that scored in that inning would have been enough with Lester’s excellent outing. He threw 89 pitches (61 strikes) and allowed only three hits and a walk. Had Baez not walked in the top of the seventh, Lester might have come out for the bottom of the frame.

By then the Cubs had put two more on the board with an RBI triple by Albert Almora Jr. and a subsequent RBI double from Russell. They added another in the eighth on an RBI single by Bryant, scoring Ian Happ, who had singled and stolen second base.

In the ninth, the Brewers sent their closer, Corey Knebel, in for an inning of work. You usually wouldn’t do this in a 6-0 game, but Knebel hadn’t thrown since March 30 and typically managers will try to get closers some work like this.

With one out, Knebel hit Baez, who reached base all five times he batted in this one (a single, three walks and that HBP. About the walks:

Jason Heyward, who had come into the game an inning earlier, put a really good swing on a Knebel fastball [VIDEO] for his first home run of the season.

That’s one of the best swings I’ve seen from Heyward since he became a Cub. More just like that one, please.

One batter later, Knebel landed awkwardly on his left foot and appeared to suffer some sort of hamstring injury. He was helped off the field and couldn’t put any weight on his left leg at all. You really hate to see that, no matter what team is involved. The way Knebel was carried off the field reminded me of the way Contreras was helped off last August in San Francisco after a similar hamstring injury. I wish Knebel the best in getting back on the field, but he’s likely out for several weeks.

The Cubs bullpen continued its excellent early-season work. Carl Edwards Jr., Steve Cishek and Eddie Butler threw three innings and allowed just one hit, striking out five. Butler, in particular, has been a revelation in the pen. He struck out two of the three hitters he faced and his fastball was consistently hitting 95. Looks like management made the right choice in keeping him on the 25-man roster.

And if you were worried about Jon Lester, consider this:

Miller Park didn’t come close to selling out for the first of this four-game series. The paid attendance announced was 24,310, and as usual, it sounded on TV like about half Cubs fans. I’d expect more tonight and over the weekend. The restriction of ticket sales to Wisconsin residents, referred to in the broadcast, was just for one presale. Clearly — at least for this game — it didn’t accomplish what the Brewers wanted it to. If Cubs fans want to go to games in Milwaukee, they will find a way.

A thank you goes to NBC Sports Chicago, who restored “CUBS” to their scorebox:

One last note. Again, the jersey the Cubs wear should have nothing to do with their play, but the team is now 3-0 this year wearing road grays, and 0-3 wearing the blue alts. Baseball people being the superstitious (or as Joe Maddon would say, “little-stitious”) folks they generally are, perhaps wearing the grays the rest of this road trip is called for.

At least we know these games won’t be rained out!

One thing the Cubs are certainly grateful for this weekend is the roof at Miller Park. While the inside of the park isn’t heated, it’s generally expected to be about 30 degrees warmer inside than outside. That means inside temps for this game should be in the mid-60s (Wednesday’s game time temp was reported as 65).

Thus, much better conditions for playing baseball than the Cubs had in their rain-abbreviated one-game set in Cincinnati.

Hopefully, that will warm up the Cubs bats, too. Just three teams in the N.L. (Giants, Phillies, Reds) have scored fewer runs than the Cubs’ 19. Small sample size, etc. etc.

On the other hand, only two teams in the N.L. (Mets, Dodgers) have allowed fewer runs than the Cubs’ 19. How’d you like to be the Dodgers right now? They’ve outscored their opponents 22-19 in their first seven games, but are 2-5.

Relax. This team is good. They will win lots of games, hopefully beginning tonight.

Also, a Brewers note: Christian Yelich left Wednesday’s game with some sort of oblique issue. He won’t play tonight and at this writing it’s uncertain when he’ll return.

You probably don’t want to hear any more about Jon Lester’s first 2018 start.

There’s a meme about the Brewers running wild on Lester, but overall his numbers against Milwaukee are quite good: six career starts, 2.77 ERA, 1.154 WHIP. Stolen bases: 14. Caught stealing: 3. That’s not great, but in six starts, just 17 steal attempts, which isn’t a lot.

Maybe Jon will surprise us with a new pickoff move tonight. Like this one, perhaps:

Current Brewers are hitting .274 (17-for-62) against him with no home runs and 20 strikeouts. 12 of those 17 hits are by Ryan Braun and Lorenzo Cain; the rest of the current Brewers are 5-for-30 against Lester.

Brent Suter threw pretty well for Milwaukee last year after he was inserted into their rotation, including two good starts vs. the Cubs in which he allowed just one run in 12⅓ total innings. He’s a soft tosser who, when his game is on, can induce weak contact. His first start of 2018 wasn’t quite that good: five innings, three runs, a home run allowed.

Current Cubs are a small sample size 12-for-43 (.279) against Suter with no home runs.

The 2018 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used during 2017. Here's how it works.

You'll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream "Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads" so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked "Chicago Cubs Game Threads" at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game's StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
