Cubs obliterated by Cardinals and Matt Carpenter

Heroes and Goats remains on vacation . Besides, none of you surely want to talk a great deal about yesterday’s game. So, this will be another short one. The Good? If you can call it that, the Cubs did manage 10 hits and seven walks. They only scored five runs with all of those base-runners and so it isn’t a great number. But, they didn’t go down without any fight.

But Jon Lester had the start everyone was afraid of. His peripherals haven’t been in line with his extremely strong first half performance. And so, people have been waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop. On the one hand, I’m irritated on Jon’s behalf. He’s won just about every time he’s pitched and people are more concerned with what he isn’t doing. On the other hand, I love statistics, absolutely believe you use them to get a sense of where things are coming from and where they are likely to go. I get it, there were warning signs.

Jon has survived in the past with less than the numbers people would want from him. So I’m not going to sell his stock at this point (if I can step on the turf of one of our other front page writers). I get it, there is something to keep an eye on there. But I also believe if things start regressing that Jon is absolutely capable of changing his approach. We used to throw stones in his direction about his poor hitting and all of the stealing against him and he got better at both of those. He’s clearly traded some strike out this year to try to control contact. It worked until it didn’t. Let’s see how he responds and then revisit, shall we?

With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.

That was... entertaining.

Lefty O’Doul was a major-league outfielder for 11 seasons, in the 1920s and 1930s. After that he went on to a long career managing in the Pacific Coast League, then an important minor league with a degree of independence from the big leagues.

In 1956, at age 59, with roster rules much more casual than they are now, he put himself into a game as a pinch-hitter, and promptly boomed a triple over the heads of the outfielders. As to how he did that, he said:

“A triple. Fifty-nine years old. How about that?” O’Doul later enthused to baseball historian Lawrence Ritter. “Right there -- 40 years too late -- I learned the secret of successful hitting. It consists of two things. The first is clean living, and the second is to bat against a pitcher who’s laughing so hard that he can hardly throw the ball.”

And that, I think, is the only way to approach Friday afternoon’s 18-5 Cubs loss to the Cardinals. Between the three-hour, 54-minute game time, 28 hits, 15 walks and 23 runs, and three position players pitching for the Cubs, all you could do was laugh. The position-player thing hadn’t been done in quite some time:

And thus, I present to you as a permanent record of this highly entertaining game that counts as only one loss in the standings, my scorecard from this afternoon:

You know, once the Cubs were down 15-1, I figured we might as well see some history, but Cardinals interim manager Mike Shildt either didn’t know or didn’t care that Matt Carpenter had just tied a major-league record by hitting three home runs and two doubles in a game. He’s just the second player to do that. The first was also in the ballpark — Kris Bryant did that for the Cubs during his MVP season, June 27, 2016 against the Reds at Cincinnati. But Shildt pulled Carpenter after he had amassed 16 total bases — that sets a record for a leadoff batter, which broke a mark that was set by Davey Lopes, at Wrigley Field, August 20, 1974, when Lopes hit three homers, a double and single in an 18-8 Dodgers win over the Cubs.

The 18 runs was the most scored by a visiting team at Wrigley since September 5, 2010, when the Mets beat the Cubs by the same score, 18-5.

Historic things like this can be fun when your team is getting crushed. So can all the position players pitching. Tommy La Stella touched 77 miles per hour with his fastball. Consider this: that’s only 10 miles per hour slower than some of Kyle Hendricks’ fastball offerings. (And if you think that’s a slam to Hendricks, I’d think that some talk like that was probably going on in the Cubs clubhouse after the game.)

Victor Caratini was going along well on the mound until he allowed a two-run homer to Yairo Munoz, and there’s no shame in that, because the Cardinals rookie had five homers in 151 career at-bats coming into this game and his previous long ball was off Madison Bumgarner.

So in the end, the only Cubs “pitcher” who wasn’t scored on was Ian Happ, who shut the Cardinals down in the ninth inning.

It rained a couple of times, once quite hard for about two minutes. You might not have noticed that because it was during an inning break. Despite the dire forecasts of all-day rains, it was pretty nice most of the afternoon. Well, the weather was, anyway. not the Cubs baseball.

These things happen. And as I said, all you can do is laugh when this kind of game crops up, understand that it counts as just one loss in the standings, and Joe Maddon’s creative use of three position players as pitchers saved the bullpen for Saturday’s doubleheader, which is likely more important than this one game.

Tyler Chatwood will start the afternoon game Saturday. That’s the makeup game for the April 16 rainout. Luke Weaver will start the day game for the Cardinals. That game begins at 12:05 p.m. CT and TV coverage for that one is on WGN.

And trust me. It’ll be much better than this one. Heroes & Goats from Thursday night’s win, a much happier event, will post here at 8 p.m. CT.

The Cubs go for their fifth consecutive win.

Friday notes:

The Cubs are 30-16 since May 27, tied with the Dodgers for the best record in the N.L. since that date.

Since 2015, the Cubs have put together a 150-73 record in the “second half” (including Thursday night’s win), and the team’s .673 win percentage is by far the best in the baseball. Cleveland is second with a .615 (136-85) in the “second half” since the start of 2015.

The 13 hits the Cubs had Thursday night give them double digits in hits in 13 of their last 18 games.

The Cubs’ 29-15 (.659) record at home is the best home record in the National League.

The Cubs’ +118 run differential is the best in the National League — by 35. The Dodgers are next best at +82.

Walk watch: The Cubs have drawn 367 walks, second in the N.L. to the Reds (376). That’s 3.9 walks per game, a pace for 632, which would be third-best in franchise history.

Although some of his peripherals suggest otherwise, Jon Lester is having a fine season, and overall the Cubs have gone 16-3 in his 19 starts, which is really all you can ask from a starting pitcher these days.

In three starts against the Cardinals this year, he’s posted a 2.08 ERA and 1.096 WHIP, and he has a 1.98 ERA and 1.226 WHIP in nine starts at Wrigley Field in 2018, with only three home runs allowed in 54⅓ innings. That should bode well for this afternoon.

Jack Flaherty, just 22 years old, has made 14 starts for the Cardinals this year and been generally pretty effective. One of those starts was against the Cubs, June 17 in St. Louis, where he threw five shutout innings, allowing just two singles and three walks. That and a one-inning relief appearance last September are his only career appearances against the Cubs.

His last four starts, though, have not been quite as good: 5.27 ERA, 1.442 WHIP, though he is coming off an outing of five shutout innings against the Reds.

Today’s game is on NBC Sports Chicago. It’s also on MLB Network (outside the Chicago and St. Louis markets).

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
