Cubs bats silenced for second straight day in 5-1 loss

I had certainly hoped the 100th game of the season would have produced something more than a second consecutive dud. The D-Backs had been scuffling a bit and so this series is a frustrating one. To be sure, they are a talented and strong baseball team. But, they hadn’t been lighting the world on fire over the last month or so. So you’d hope this series would have gone better for the Cubs. Alas, it didn’t. No doubt the series with the Cardinals over the weekend in which the Cubs played four tight games (and five games overall) in four days against a long time rival. And don’t kid yourself if you just looked at the scores for that last series, the four games other than the Cardinal blowout were close games. The Cardinals bullpen was lousy start to finish in that series, but those other games were all close until they were blown open late.

That division rival thing matters on so many levels. Without sounding like an apologist for the Cubs - make no mistake, they’ve been really flat these last two games and have to own that - when you play these teams you don’t see so often, it is just different. You get such a familiarity with your division foes, seeing them basically six series a year. You could see one pitcher four times or more over the course of a season. With these D-Backs, the Cubs just saw a pitcher who they haven’t faced since 2014. Of course it runs deeper than that. You don’t get the same feel for what they are going to try to do against you in their approach. It doesn’t surprise me when these teams you only see for two series sometimes get a little out of whack from what you’d expect.

Alas, the net result is the Cubs have lost back to back games for the first time in a month. And of course, all across Cubs Twitter panic or at least concern has set back in. Don’t get me wrong, I see the things other people do. Most importantly, the pitching on this team is a bit of a mess. I was saying all through the winning that falling behind every day and coming back to win is just not a great model. Not every team’s bullpen is combustible and it puts a whole lot of strain on your hitters. The lineup has fizzled the last two days and they have definitely been up and down all season. But I’m not going to worry about the offense. The Cubs hitters top to bottom are talented and productive. My one concern is Kris Bryant. It seems likely at this point that we are never going to see MVP-level Bryant this year (yes, it is a weird day to draw this conclusion when he didn’t even play). Kris has been generally productive at the plate this year, even without the power, but the Cubs lineup becomes a whole lot less formidable without his elite bat in it.

With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.

THE THREE HEROES:

Superhero - Ian Happ (.038). Ian had a double and a walk in his four plate appearances. Ian will spend this year designated as the person who got off to a lousy start and so most fans are dismissive of just how excellent a season he has had. His .258/.282/.460 line is good for a wRC+ of 125. In his last 250 plate appearances, that line improves to .271/.408/.483, good for a wRC+ of 137.

Hero - Victor Caratini (.023). Vic had a hit and a walk in his three plate appearances. He got a start behind the plate and then showed some of his versatility when he finished the game at third base.

Sidekick - Jesse Chavez (.016). Welcome to Heroes and Goats, Jesse. What a nice way to make your debut here (you know, other than the game outcome). Jesse strikes out the side in posting his third scoreless outing since joining the Cubs.

THE THREE GOATS:

Billy Goat - Albert Almora Jr. (-.164). Albert was hitless in four at bats on the day. He lands here largely because of his strikeout with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to end the inning. That was pretty much the end of any potential comeback.

Goat - Kyle Schwarber (-.131). Kyle was also hitless on the day. My impression of Kyle’s season is that in some future season when he is respected as one of the game’s elite hitters, he is going to be an absolute monster. Not only is his walk total decreased and his strikeout total increased by the number of borderline calls that go against him, but I dream on the idea of him seeing a lot of 3-0 and 3-1 counts that right now are either 2-1 or 2-2.

Kid - Tommy La Stella (-.089). Tommy grounded into a double play after a leadoff single in the fifth. The league adjusted to Tommy a couple of months ago and he’s been mostly MIA since.

WPA Play of the Game: Steven Souza Jr. batted with two outs and a runner on first in the fifth inning. This was one of those real turning point at bats. If Hendricks retires Souza, he books a pretty solid start against a good team. He doesn’t as Sousa doubles, driving in a second run. (.117)

*Cubs Play of the Game: Kyle gets both ends of this today. He struck out Jake Lamb with the bases loaded and two outs to escape the second inning unscathed. (.081)

Cumulative Leaders:

Superhero - Javier Baez 19.5

Hero - Brandon Morrow 13

Sidekick - Ian Happ 12.5

Up Next: The teams play the third of four games this afternoon. Jon Lester will be on the mound looking to end this mini-losing streak before it grows into something larger. Jon is 12-3 with a 3.14 ERA. Over his last seven starts he is 5-1 with a 5.02 ERA. Those are certainly odd numbers, but particularly his last seven, but also his season numbers were trashed by his terrible start last time out. In just three innings he allowed seven hits, five walks and eight runs in a loss to the Cardinals. Last year, Jon had two starts and worked 10 innings total against these D-Backs. He 12 hits, five walks and seven runs (six earned). Hopefully he can do a little bit better today.

The D-Backs counter with Robbie Ray who will always make me think more of a third tier Marvel character than a baseball player. Robbie is 3-2 with a 5.37 ERA. In his last seven starts, he is 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA and has only thrown 32 innings. At less than five innings per start, he is not providing any length at all for them. Last time out, he was a bit better logging 5.1 innings in a start against the Rockies. But he still allowed five runs on eight hits and a walk. He hasn’t faced the Cubs since 2016, but he’s pitched relative well against them in his two lifetime starts with a 3.27 ERA.

Once again, the Cubs got stymied by the D-backs. And Javy Baez left the game after a collision at second base.

In the preview to Tuesday night’s game, I wrote:

Kyle Hendricks’ last start... well, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t really good either

And guess what? Kyle had another one of those. Oh, sure, there were more strikeouts (nine, a season high), particularly on changeups, but he simply gave up way too many hits, and ran out of gas in the fifth inning. A squeezed strike zone didn’t help as Kyle ran up a large pitch count early, and he allowed three runs in five innings. That was enough for Arizona, as they defeated the Cubs for the second straight night, 5-1. It’s the first time the Cubs have lost back-to-back games in a month, since June 24-25, the last two of a five-game losing streak.

Despite all the long counts and high pitch count, Hendricks managed to keep the D-backs scoreless until the fifth. And it might have worked out all right until he gave up consecutive two-out hits to Steven Souza Jr. and Jake Lamb that turned a potential 1-0 deficit into a 3-0 deficit.

The thing I really didn’t get in that inning is this: It’s still scoreless, Jon Jay is on third after a triple with one out. Why on Earth did the Cubs pitch to Paul Goldschmidt? He’s a lifetime .362 hitter against the Cubs and hits .342 at Wrigley Field. They should have put him on and pitched to David Peralta. You simply can’t let Goldschmidt beat you.

Meanwhile, the Cubs were simply not getting many opportunities off Clay Buchholz. They managed runners on first and third with two out in the fourth, but Kyle Schwarber grounded out to end that threat. In the fifth, Addison Russell led off with a single, but Tommy La Stella, batting for Hendricks, hit into a double play.

The D-backs added a run in the sixth off Eddie Butler, who was making his first big-league appearance since April. All told, Butler didn’t pitch too badly after allowing hits to the first two batters he faced, and he ate up two innings, helping save the rest of the bullpen.

Jason Heyward got the Cubs on the board in the sixth with this solo home run [VIDEO] to the opposite field, his seventh of the year:

In the seventh, Souza led off with a single and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double [VIDEO]. In that video, you can see Souza’s hard slide into Javier Baez; Javy’s left knee looked like it got hit by Souza’s left foot on the slide. After a few moments Baez stayed in the game, only to leave before the next defensive inning. Ben Zobrist, who had batted for Butler, stayed in at second base.

That led to a bit of extracurricular activity in the ninth. With two out, Peralta singled. Souza was the next hitter, and Steve Cishek hit Souza with his first pitch. That led to some words exchanged [VIDEO] between Souza and Anthony Rizzo.

You’ll note on that clip, which is from Fox Sports Arizona, that even the D-backs announcers, including former Cubs TV analyst Bob Brenly, seemed a bit upset with Souza doing that. Nothing happened other than some discussion.

Here are comments from Baez and Rizzo after the game [VIDEO].

Baez said it wasn’t a dirty slide, and he’s right, but it might prevent Javy from playing in Wednesday afternoon’s game.

Simply put, the Cubs once again didn’t get quite enough out of their starting pitcher:

That’s got to change.

And the offense simply has dried up and disappeared the last two nights, producing just two runs.

A good thing that happened in this one: Jesse Chavez again had a solid appearance, this time striking out all three hitters he faced. Chavez has already helped save other Cubs relievers from throwing too much, in just three appearances.

The Cubs lost a game in the standings to the Brewers, Cardinals and Pirates, all of whom won Tuesday night. They still lead the Brewers by 1½ games, and three in the loss column.

The Cubs and D-backs will play the third of this four-game set Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Jon Lester will go for the Cubs and Robbie Ray starts for Arizona. Game time is 1:20 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via NBC Sports Chicago.

The Cubs look to even up their series with the D-backs.

Tuesday notes!

Update on Anthony Rizzo, no-longer-relief-pitcher, but still leadoff man: Since moving to the leadoff spot, .516/.619/.742, 16-for-31, five doubles, a triple, eight walks, two HBP, team record 6-3.

Rizzo since June 28: .359/.457/.487, 28-for-78, eight doubles, one triple, 12 walks, three HBP. The only thing that’s missing here: home runs. Rizzo hasn’t homered since June 24.

Including Sunday’s win, the Cubs lead the majors with 32 come-from-behind victories this season. The Phillies are second with 29 such wins and the Red Sox are third with 28.

All the recent first-inning runs had led me to believe that the Cubs had a “first-inning problem,” as they were purported to have last year. This shows that really isn’t true:

Kyle Hendricks’ last start... well, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t really good either... I just wish Kyle and the coaching staff could figure out why his location isn’t what it used to be. You know he lives and dies by locating. It appeared earlier this month he’d solved that issue, now it’s back again.

It has been a while since Hendricks faced the D-backs — not since April 9, 2016 in Arizona. That means most of the current D-backs haven’t faced him much, just 7-for-38 (.184). That’s good; so is the 0-for-5 put up by Paul Goldschmidt. Small sample size, but Goldschmidt is the D-back who generally hurts the Cubs most. Hopefully, this is a good sign.

Clay Buchholz. Man, he’s still around?

Buchholz was a first-round pick of the Red Sox in 2005 and pitched for them through 2016, so Theo & Co. are quite familiar with him. He’s made 11 different trips to the disabled list in his big-league career, the latest one ending today when he was activated after being out nearly a month with a strained left oblique.

He has one career start against the Cubs, July 1, 2014 in Boston, and I post that link mostly for amusement value. He faced Ben Zobrist quite a bit when both were in the A.L. East; Zobrist is 7-for-40 against him. Joe Maddon and Jim Hickey also should be quite familiar with him from their time in the A.L. East.

Buchholz is 33 now. I have no idea what to expect from him, though he made seven starts, most of which were decent, before this DL stint.

The 2018 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used during 2017. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
