The Cubs went way behind, then almost caught up.

In 2016, the Cubs did not have a first- or second-round draft pick because of the signings of John Lackey and Jason Heyward.

So their first pick that year was third-round righthander Thomas Hatch out of Oklahoma State. Hatch pitched last year at Double-A and had a decent year (3.82 ERA, 1.309 WHIP in 26 starts).

Tuesday night was the first time he pitched in a big-league spring game, and it was not successful. Hatch was pounded for six hits, two walks, eight runs (seven earned) and a home run and though the Cubs mounted a late comeback, they lost 8-6 to the Royals, fielding a team of subs and non-roster guys against a Kansas City team that featured most of their regulars.

I didn’t go to this game so watched it along with you via the Fox Sports Kansas City feed.

There are a couple of highlights from this game worth a look. First is this long home run [VIDEO] by Mark Zagunis that was the Cubs’ first run.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

And, here’s a slick diving catch [VIDEO] by Johnny Field.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

As I’ve noted before, Field is an intriguing player. If he could learn to strike out less, he could be a good fifth outfielder, even on a contending team. He’s got surprising power and plays defense well at all three outfield positions. For now, he’s likely headed to Iowa to be a replacement on the Cubs’ big-league roster if there are injuries.

After Hatch left the game, six Cubs relievers combined to throw six shutout innings and allow just two hits with seven strikeouts. They also walked five, though, and that’s been an issue particularly for Dillon Maples (two of the five walks). Allen Webster, who has an outside shot at the Opening Day roster, didn’t walk anyone.

Among Cubs who will be on that OD roster eight days from now, Victor Caratini was 2-for-3, including a triple.

That’s about it for this split-squad game. The Cubs will play again at night on Wednesday, when they host the Dodgers at Sloan Park. Cole Hamels will pitch at Sloan for the first time, and Julio Urias will go for the Dodgers. Game time is 9:05 p.m. CT. TV coverage will be via the Dodgers network SportsNet LA, and that broadcast will be live on MLB Network. There will also be an audio webcast via cubs.com. The game preview for tonight’s game will post here at 7 p.m. CT.

Fortunately, it doesn’t appear to be anything serious.

MESA, Arizona — Well, I told you this would be an odd baseball game.

I thought it would be a yawner, something with no predictive value for the season to come at all.

The Cubs’ 6-4 win over a team of miscellaneous Mariners minor leaguers and NRI’s instead had several occurrences of significance.

The first was Yu Darvish leaving the game with two out in the fifth (and one strike to go to finish the inning) with an apparent blister. Here’s how it looked:

Darvish’s next start, if everyone stays on schedule, should be Sunday against the Padres in Peoria, or, if the team doesn’t want him to make the bus ride, perhaps in camp against minor leaguers.

Then there was a bit of a kerfuffle regarding hit batters. Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras both got hit, and that shouldn’t have been a big deal. Remember, these are minor-league pitchers the Cubs were facing. Then this happened:

I mean... that pitch looked like it got away. You can see CJ’s reaction of disbelief in the video, as noted by Jordan Bastian. Don’t think I can recall the last time — if ever — a Cub was ejected from a spring training game.

Then there was yet another good inning thrown by Tyler Chatwood. Granted, this was against minor leaguers, and three substitute minor leaguers at that. But he threw strikes and got three ground ball outs. It’s yet another positive sign for Chatwood, who might just be a great secret weapon in the Cubs bullpen this year.

Here’s video of Willson Contreras throwing out a runner in the first inning:

Thus, showing Willson is just fine after taking a foul ball off his hand last Thursday.

So, this game was pretty eventful, despite being against minor leaguers. Darvish singled in a run, too, in a three-run Cubs fourth.

Attendance watch: On a perfect 82-degree afternoon, the Cubs came up short of a sellout. 13,576 paid to see this one, making the season total for 13 dates 173,899, or 13,377 per date.

This is the afternoon portion of a day/night split-squad doubleheader.

MESA, Arizona — This is going to be a very odd baseball game.

I assure you that not a single Mariners fan cares about this game. The actual Mariners are going to open the 2018 regular season in a little more than 15 hours from the time this preview posts, against the Athletics in Tokyo. The players wearing Mariners uniforms this afternoon in Mesa are guys who didn’t get chosen to make the trip to Japan, and minor leaguers.

The Cubs are a split squad. But, as shown below, they’ll be playing most of their regulars in this game. Willson Contreras returns after missing a couple of games because he took a foul tip off his right hand last Thursday.

SITE NOTE: As noted above, today is a split-squad day. The other game, Cubs at Royals, will begin at 8:05 p.m. CT. I am attending the game in Mesa, and will write a recap of that game that will also serve as a preview for the night game. All the threads for both games will reside in the same StoryStream.

Here are today’s particulars.

Cubs lineup:

Zobrist 2B, Baez SS, Rizzo 1B, Bryant 3B, Schwarber LF, Contreras C, Heyward RF, Happ CF, Darvish P

Nico Hoerner is once again on the reserves list for this afternoon’s game.

Mariners lineup:

Polo DH, Negron SS, White 1B, Fraley LF, Lewis RF, Lopes 2B, Nola C, Mariscal 3B, Miller CF

I will almost guarantee you that the only player in that lineup who you have heard of is Kristopher Negron, who was in spring camp with the Cubs in 2016 and who played that year at Iowa. Of the 10 starting players for the Mariners today, eight of them are on their 40-man roster or NRI list.

Yu Darvish will start for the Cubs. Cubs relievers this afternoon, in alphabetical order: Brad Brach, Tyler Chatwood, Carl Edwards Jr. and Mike Montgomery.

Chatwood’s outing will be on two days’ rest. This, I think, clearly shows they are taking a look at what he could do as a short reliever.

Nabil Crismatt will go for the Mariners. I promise you I am not making that name up. Crismatt is a righthanded pitcher who has spent the last seven years in the Mets organization and split 2018 between Double-A and Triple-A.
