Cubs batter Diamondbacks 9-1

Saturday’s game was an odd one. Yu Darvish struggled through two innings and it looked like this one could have gone a different way. But then the Cubs exploded for five runs in the third inning, all after Zack Godley had retired the first two batters in the inning. The big blow was a three-run homer by David Bote who would also hit a second homer later in the game.

The Cubs managed 12 hits to just two for the Diamondbacks. The Cubs pounded out six doubles and three homers. (It’s virtually never a good sign when the other team musters more home runs than you do hits.) It’s possible that things bubbled over a bit as it sure looked like the Diamondbacks hit Bote intentionally.

Darvish notched a quality start and really appeared to lock down after the Cubs gave him the five-run third inning. Yu pounded the strike zone and only ended up giving one run on a very long home run. That was probably at least a little bit the byproduct of the fact that he was so consistently pounding the strike zone.

The Cubs once again move to one game over the .500 mark. They’ll look to pick up a second series win against the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.

Goat: Kyle Schwarber (-.029). I always say that when it gets lopsided and stays that way, H&G can be unforgiving.
Up Next: The Cubs will be looking to take four of six on the season from the Diamondbacks while the D-backs try to force a season split. Four of six for the Cubs at a time when Arizona is playing well would be a fine accomplishment.

The Cubs will send red hot Jose Quintana to the mound. Jose is 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA in 28 innings of work. He’s struck out 36 batters and walked only nine. He’s won his last three starts, lasting seven innings of each and allowing a total of only two runs on 14 hits. He faced the Diamondbacks twice last year and was 0-1. He allowed 14 runs in just 9⅓ innings of work. He also lost his only other career start against them back in 2014. Of course this team even looks different than the one he faced last year. Still, these D-backs are dynamic offensively. Adam Jones is one of two D-backs with a decent sample size against Jose and it’s a good sample for Adam. He’s got three doubles and two homers in 20 plate appearances for a 1.659 OPS. The only other Arizona player with more plate appearances is Eduardo Escobar who has a .456 OPS over 29 PA.

Luke Weaver will be the opposition. Luke is 2-1 with a 3.33 ERA on the year in 27 innings of work. Last time out he was a winner, going 6⅓ innings in Pittsburgh allowing only six hits, one walk and one run. He struck out seven. He faced the Cubs four times in 2018 and was 1-2 and allowed 15 runs in just 23 innings of work. Five different Cubs have at least 10 PA against Weaver and the lowest OPS of the five (Javier Baez, Anthony Rizzo, Jason Heyward, Ben Zobrist and Bryant) was Bryant at .967. Suffice is to say the Cubs have seen the ball well against Luke. Collectively, players on the 40-man roster have a 1.008 OPS in 116 plate appearances (including 0-12 with no walks out of four Cubs pitchers).

A two-homer game from David Bote and an outstanding outing by Yu Darvish led to an easy win.

The Cubs trounced the Diamondbacks 9-1 Saturday night and there are a lot of good things to unpack about this win, not the least of which is Yu Darvish’s first really good outing of 2019.

But I want to start with the Cubs’ third-inning rally, which was one of the finest I’ve seen in the last couple of years.

That started after two shaky Darvish innings, in which he allowed no runs but threw 50 pitches. At that point there was a real question whether Darvish would make it even to the fifth inning.

And after the first two hitters — Kyle Schwarber and Darvish — were strikeout victims of Zack Godley, you had to start wondering if this game was going to wind up like Friday’s.

But Daniel Descalso drew a two-out walk. And Kris Bryant doubled him to third. Then something happened that you rarely see in baseball anymore — a balk. It was just the second balk by a Diamondbacks pitcher this year (the Cubs have none and N.L. teams as a whole have 17), scoring the first run of the game [VIDEO].

Anthony Rizzo followed with a double to make it 2-0 and after Godley ran a 2-0 count on Javier Baez, the D-backs intentionally passed him.

That was a mistake on their part, because David Bote then hit a 3-2 pitch in the general direction of the Grand Canyon [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a baseball land in the second deck in that ballpark before. That ball was absolutely demolished:

So now it’s 5-0, five straight Cubs batters reaching base, capped by the three-run homer by Bote.

That seemed to energize Darvish. He came out for the bottom of the third and struck out the side in order, three pretty good hitters, David Peralta, Adam Jones and Christian Walker, on only 13 pitches.

In the fifth, Rizzo led off with a double, and one out later, Bote again [VIDEO].

Bote’s third homer of the season and second of the night gave him the first multi-homer game of his career.

Now it’s 7-0 and Darvish is still cruising. He’d only allowed one hit through the first five innings (though three walks), but Peralta ruined any thoughts of a scoreless outing with a solo homer in the sixth.

Overall, though, this was an excellent outing from Darvish: six innings, two hits, one run, four walks, eight strikeouts, 110 pitches. It was the first time he’d finished the sixth inning this year, the first time he’d gone over 100 pitches, and he matched his season high with the eight K’s. All in all, this was very, very encouraging for Yu and for the rotation in general. If this is what we can get from Darvish going forward, that makes the entire rotation stronger.

Could Taylor Davis have been a positive factor for Darvish? Davis has a reputation as a good pitch-framer in the minor leagues. Willson Contreras needs a day off from time to time. Perhaps Davis as Darvish’s personal catcher until Victor Caratini returns?

In the seventh, Anthony Rizzo joined the long-ball party [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

That made it 8-1. Javier Baez followed with a double, and then the D-backs hit Bote [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Interesting to hear the perspective of the D-backs announcers, including former Cubs TV analyst Bob Brenly, on that clip. Seriously, though, this sort of thing has to stop. The guy hits two home runs off your team’s pitchers — the response shouldn’t be “throw at him,” it should be “make better pitches.” As is the case in many of these kerfuffles, no punches were thrown and the game continued. Jason Heyward, who you can see in the middle of things, seemed more upset than Bote. Heyward took his revenge with an RBI single, completing the scoring for this game.

Kyle Ryan and Allen Webster combined for three scoreless innings in relief of Darvish. Ryan, in particular, looked impressive, throwing just 20 pitches for his two innings and striking out two.

Besides Bote’s big game, it was good to see Rizzo have a three-hit game with a home run. That improved his season slash line to .220/.360/.462, an .822 OPS which isn’t too far off his career norms. This March/April for Rizzo is much better than what he put on the board last year, and we still have two games remaining in April. Schwarber contributed two hits and has improved his slash line to .224/.280/.395, still not great, but he’s 4-for-8 with three doubles over his last three games. Baby steps.

The Cubs will go for the series win Sunday afternoon at Chase Field. Jose Quintana will start for the Cubs and Luke Weaver goes for the D-backs. Game time is 3:10 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via WGN. Sunday’s game preview will post at 1 p.m. CT.

The Cubs look to even up their series with the D-backs.

Saturday notes:

Javier Baez’ fourth-inning solo homer Friday means he has homered in five of his last nine games since April 16. Baez’ nine homers this season are second-most by any Cub in a single March/April. Alfonso Soriano hit 10 homers in the season’s opening month in 2011.

In his last eight games since April 17, Kris Bryant is hitting .280 (7-for-25) with a .455 OBP and a .975 OPS with seven walks and only five strikeouts. Still worried about KB? Don’t be.

Daniel Descalso is hitting .500 (8-for-16) with 10 RBI with runners in scoring position. That’s tied for the highest mark in the N.L. with Josh Bell and tied for fourth-highest in the majors.

The Cubs have completed the first 24 games of 2019 without playing extra innings for the first time since making it to Game 28 in 2006. Partly as a result of this, the Cubs have pitched the third-fewest innings in baseball (208⅓ innings). Only the Twins (203 innings) and White Sox (206 innings) have fewer. FWIW, the Cubs team record for the most games from the start of a season without playing extra innings is 47, set in 1968.

The roof will be open again tonight at Chase Field. Friday’s game was the first Cubs game on artificial turf since a two-game set at Tampa Bay, September 19-20, 2017. Prior to that, the Cubs had not played on artificial turf since September 8-10, 2014 in Toronto. The new artificial turf at Chase Field looks great and I’m glad they got rid of that silly “path” from the plate to the pitcher’s mound.

Yu Darvish.

Well, he’s starting another game. He’s healthy. He’s thrown pitches as fast as 99 miles per hour this season. He’s got the second-best strikeout/nine inning rate among Cubs starters (9.9; first is Jose Quintana at 11.6).

But man, the walks — 7.1 per nine innings, approaching 2018 Tyler Chatwood territory, and that includes a game in which he didn’t walk anyone. Of the 407 pitches he has thrown this year, only 30 of them have come after the fifth inning.

His start vs. the D-backs last Saturday at Wrigley Field wasn’t terrible — he struck out seven in five innings — but it wasn’t all that good either.

We can only hope things will be better this time.

Zack Godley has made five starts this year. Two of them have been decent, the other three were pretty bad, so overall his 6.67 ERA and 1.593 WHIP are pretty reflective of his performance.

The last time he faced the Cubs was July 26, 2018 at Wrigley Field, where he allowed four runs in 5⅔ innings.

A curiosity about Godley: In 2018 he led the N.L. in hit batters (12) and led the major leagues in wild pitches (17). The Cubs currently have been hit the most times by opposing pitchers in 2019, 16 HBP. Something to watch for, perhaps. Note that I’m not saying Godley throws at hitters, just that he has had trouble with command and control.

Based on these pitchers’ records so far in 2019, this figures to be a high-scoring affair.

The 2019 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.
