Another Cubbie Clunker

We’ll try to keep this short but there ain’t gonna be anything sweet about it. The Cubs lost 10-2 in a game that wasn’t actually that close. Oof.

On any given day, any team can beat any other one on any given day in baseball. It isn’t all that unusual to see the worst team in baseball finish the year with one or more wins against the team with the best record. It’s a hard game to just roll every day.

This game doesn’t even qualify under that category. The Mets are an injury depleted, otherwise near average team. But on Saturday, they steamrolled the Cubs. The Mets have won two straight and will look for a third win in four tries on Sunday. We’ll talk more about that one later.

With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.

I thought I’d put some nice things in the headline instead of what actually happened in this game.

You don’t really want a recap of the Cubs’ 10-2 loss to the Mets, do you?

Now, how can you be upset after seeing those photos?

Seriously, this was one awful game. Jose Quintana was just bad. Nine hits, nine runs (eight earned) in 4⅓ innings. That’s his worst game as a Cub and in only one other game in his career (this one) did he allow as many runs.

Still. That does not rationalize booing him off the mound. I think booing one of your own players is justified only for perceived lack of effort. It’s not as if Q wasn’t trying. He just got hit, and hit hard, and it’s not like the two guys who homered off him (Pete Alonso and Wilson Ramos) are bad hitters, they’re not. Alonso tied the Mets rookie record with his 26th homer (set by Darryl Strawberry in 1983)... and we’re not even halfway through this season.

Meanwhile, the Cubs had some scoring chances in the first two innings but failed, and after that Zack Wheeler retired 15 straight Cubs until Willson Contreras led off the seventh with a single. And again, Wheeler is a pretty good pitcher. The Cubs eventually loaded the bases in that inning and scored on a double play, big whoop.

Then we got entertained in the ninth when Victor Caratini, who had played the rest of the game at first base, took to the mound to pitch. Snapping off 67 mile per hour “fastballs,” he retired the first two hitters on a line drive to left and a grounder to Anthony Rizzo, and then he did this [VIDEO].

The rest of the game? Not so much.

These things happen. What more can you say about a game like this? It only counts for one loss, and even if the Brewers win their game against the Reds (at this writing they lead in the middle innings), the Cubs are still in first place entering Sunday’s action.

Hopefully, today will be better than yesterday.

Thanks to the Reds, who defeated the Brewers for the second straight night to keep the Cubs 1½ games in first place.
Someday, Jose Quintana will turn into the dominant pitcher we’ve hoped he would become. Perhaps today is that day.

Q can be maddening. He’ll put together two or three really good outings, then have a clunker. In his last start, he suddenly couldn’t find the strike zone in the first inning, walked in a run, then was solid the rest of the way.

He last faced the Mets May 31, 2018 in New York, throwing six shutout innings. In fact, lifetime vs. the Mets he has a 1.35 ERA and 1.000 WHIP in three starts covering 20 innings. Current Mets are hitting .260 (13-for-50) against him with one home run (Robinson Cano).

Zack Wheeler was supposed to be a star when the Mets acquired him when he was still a prospect. That was eight years ago, and they got him from the Giants for Carlos Beltran.

Injuries have ruined that — he’s made 30+ starts just once in his career, though he’ll probably get there this year as well.

This year, the results have been mixed, and though he generally has gone deep into games (six innings or more in 12 of his 15 starts), he’s occasionally been hit hard. Last seven starts: 4.94 ERA, 1.311 WHIP, 11 (!) home runs in 45 innings. He doesn’t walk many, just nine in those 45 innings.

The last time he faced the Cubs was June 1, 2018 in New York, where he threw six innings and allowed two runs. The only Cub who’s faced him more than a handful of times is Jason Heyward (8-for-24, two doubles, two home runs).

The 2019 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
