Cubs lose 2-1 in St. Louis; fall to 2-5 on trip

The Cubs have led in every game since the All-Star break. That’s the good news. The bad? With last night’s loss, the team is just 9-7 since the break. The Cubs have been a second-half team through the whole Joe Maddon tenure. But if this year’s version can’t figure out how to win on the road, it just isn’t going to happen. The 7-2 homestand was great. The 2-5 start to this road trip? Not so much. After dropping the first game in this series, it feels very likely that the Cubs will continue their streak of not winning road series. The last one they won was in mid-May against the Nationals.

Certainly, the bullpen has been a cause of the losing. A number of late leads were blown including two in the previous road loss on Saturday. On Tuesday night, the Cubs bullpen threw two scoreless innings. That’s now 6⅓ innings with no earned runs over the last two games. Small sample, but encouraging. Yu Darvish allowed two runs over six innings. Better than the minimum definition of a quality start. Teams across all of the major leagues are at an .884 winning percentage when they hold their opponent to two or fewer runs, including the A’s who are a perfect 33-0 in those games.

The Cubs lost for the fourth time in a game where they held their opponent to two or fewer runs in 2019. Only six teams have lost more such games, though those six do include last night’s opponent and the Indians. So it isn’t like this is some highly predictive statistic. It is an enigma how this team’s offense just disappears, particularly on the road. We’ve heard it talked about that this team is susceptible to power pitchers. But this was Adam Wainwright shutting down the Cubs last night.

The Cubs did manage to get six hits and six walks. They parlayed that into just one run. There has been a ton of talk about lineup construction. On a dynamic offensive team, lineup construction doesn’t really matter much. Everyone is getting on base, everyone is driving runs, then you are only just trying to squeeze out the run that puts the cherry on top. An an anemic offensive team, lineup construction is extremely important. When only four different players on the team get hits in the game, it’s going to be difficult to score runs unless you correctly predict which ones might get hits and group them together. To that end, Jason Heyward batted second and had three of the team’s six hits. The three most consistent hitters were lined up behind him and had just two hits and one walk in 12 plate appearances.

With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.

WPA Play of the Game: Paul Goldschmidt continued his push for Player of the Month in the NL with a homer with one out in the sixth inning. (.190) That gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead and sent the Cubs on to yet another road loss.

Up Next: The Cubs will desperately be trying not to lose yet another road series. The Cardinals will be looking to run their record to eight wins in their last 10 games including a recent five game road winning streak.

The Cubs send Kyle Hendricks to the mound. Kyle finally looks to be getting back into his groove after an injury caused him to miss starts in June. He is 7-8 with a 3.26 ERA on the season in 113⅓innings. Over his last seven starts, he is just 1-4 despite a 3.47 ERA in 36⅓ innings. His last win came on June 9 against the Cardinals. Kyle was very good in that one. He allowed one run on eight hits and no walks in seven innings of work. He’s faced the Cardinals twice this year, and won both. He’s allowed only 1 run in 16 innings of work. But, both games were at Wrigley Field. Current Cardinals have 276 plate appearances against Kyle. But, three of the top four Cardinals in PA against him are on the injured list (Matt Carpenter, Yadier Molina and Marcell Ozuna). That leaves Kolten Wong with 33 PA and an .864 OPS. The Cardinals will certainly miss Ozuna and his 1.124 OPS in 32 PA.

The Cardinals will have Miles Mikolas on the hill. Miles has come down to Earth a bit after last year’s 18-4, 2.83 ERA season. This year he is just 7-10 and has a 4.19 ERA in 120⅓ innings. Over his last seven, he’s gotten it going a bit at 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 42 innings. In his last outing, he beat the Pirates. He threw six innings and allowed five hits, one walk and three runs in picking up the win. He’s faced the Cubs twice and is 0-1 allowing four runs in 11 innings. Mikolas has allowed a .680 OPS to right-handed hitters and an .857 to lefties. He’s also been really tough at home with a .599 OPS. Current Cubs have 133 PA against him with a .661 OPS. Jason Heyward has the most PA (18) and an .802 OPS. Javier Baez has had pretty good success with a .979 OPS in 16 PA.

This one looks like a pitchers’ duel on paper. Let’s hope the Cubs bats get it in gear.

The Cubs had ample opportunities to win this game. But they didn’t.

You knew it, didn’t you.

You knew, as soon as you saw this play [VIDEO], that this game was probably over.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

That’s Kyle Schwarber, in the top of the sixth inning, batting with the bases loaded and two out. He hit a fly ball to deep left field — you can see him, briefly, slam his bat down in frustration — and the inning was over, about 50 feet from that hit being a grand slam.

And then Paul Goldschmidt, a tormentor of the Cubs from his Diamondbacks days who had been held down pretty well in the nine previous Cubs/Cardinals games this year, homered off Yu Darvish in the bottom of that inning, and that run held up as the game-winner in a 2-1 Cubs loss to the Cardinals in the opener of their three-game series.

Like it says in the headline: Infuriating.

You know, Yu Darvish pitched pretty well in this game, with the exception of the home-run ball to Goldschmidt and the two wild pitches in the fourth inning that tied the game. (Yeah, I know, the two things that lost this game.) Darvish was dialing his fastball up to 98 at times and struck out nine while walking no one. Of the six hits he allowed, all but Goldschmidt’s homer were singles. Here’s how well Darvish has cut down on walks this year:

Yu Darvish

First inning of 2019 (March 30) : 3 BB, 3 K
Last 5 starts: 2 BB, 36 K
— Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) July 31, 2019

Darvish’s outing should have been good enough to win, but the Cubs offense failed to show up. That’s been a common theme recently.

Here’s the only real offense they showed all night, an RBI single by Javier Baez [VIDEO], scoring Jason Heyward in the fourth inning.

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

As I mentioned earlier, the Cubs did load the bases in the sixth, on a double by Anthony Rizzo and a pair of walks with two out, before Schwarber’s fly out. Earlier in that inning, Heyward had led off with a single but was thrown out trying to steal second as Kris Bryant struck out.

The Cubs aren’t really any good at stealing bases this year. Maybe J-Hey should have just stayed put. That inning’s totally different in that case.

The Cubs did get decent relief work out of Rowan Wick (who’s been quite impressive since his recall) and Steve Cishek, two scoreless innings, but they couldn’t put together anything against the Cardinals bullpen, and that, as they say, was that.

Words of wisdom from Heyward, who had three hits on the night:

The way things are going, Jason Heyward doesn't expect one team to suddenly go on a run and separate from the NLC pack:

"If you keep trying to look for a 10-game lead or whatever, it's a longer year than it is.

“This is real.” That’s about the best description I can think of for the Comedy Central, where no team seems to want to win. The Cubs drop a game behind the Cardinals with the loss, and the Brewers, who lost in extra innings to the Athletics in Oakland, are two games behind. That Milwaukee loss? A walkoff homer by Matt Olson off Josh Hader:

Josh Hader this season:
24 hits allowed, 10 home runs
— Christopher Kamka (@ckamka) July 31, 2019

Hader has now allowed more home runs this year than he did all of last year — in 30 fewer innings. Perhaps he’ll serve up a couple to the Cubs this weekend at Wrigley.

Before that, though, there’s business for the Cubs in St. Louis. They’ll try to tie for the division lead again Wednesday evening at 7:15 p.m. CT. Kyle Hendricks will start for the Cubs and Miles Mikolas will go for the Cardinals. TV coverage will be via WGN, and also a full national (no blackouts) broadcast on ESPN.

Yu Darvish has made two starts against the Cardinals this year. He got hit pretty hard May 4 at Wrigley Field, but threw six strong innings May 31 in St. Louis.

Darvish has been much more like the May 31 pitcher than the May 4 pitcher since then. He got cuffed around a bit in his last start seven days ago in San Francisco, but in general since early June has been the pitcher the Cubs thought they were getting when they signed him.

Only two current Cardinals have more than a handful of at-bats against him: Paul Goldschmidt (1-for-12, eight strikeouts) and Marcell Ozuna (4-for-12). Goldschmidt has been hot lately, so that’s an encouraging sign, I think.

Adam Wainwright just keeps on going. Tonight will be his 40th career start against the Cubs. Only six pitchers (Steve Carlton, Bob Forsch, Phil Niekro, Steve Rogers, Tom Seaver and Jerry Reuss) have made more against the Cubs in the divisional play era (since 1969).

The most recent of the previous 39 was June 2 in St. Louis, where Wainwright threw eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits. (That was after the previous night’s game had a long rain delay and ended after midnight; Cole Hamels also threw very well that afternoon.)

Since then, Wainwright has a 5.15 ERA and 1.445 WHIP in seven starts, only one of which can be characterized as “good.” The Cubs also pounded him pretty hard May 5 at Wrigley Field (six runs in five innings), though in general Wainwright has been much better at home this year (2.33 ERA, nine starts) than on the road (7.16 ERA, 10 starts). On the other hand, he’s been markedly worse in night games (14 starts, 5.88 ERA) than day games (1.74 ERA, five starts).

In short, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Today’s game is on NBC Sports Chicago. It’s also on MLB Network (outside the Cubs and Cardinals market territories).

Please visit our SB Nation Cardinals site Viva El Birdos. If you do go there to interact with Cardinals fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.

The 2019 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
